how to turn off pop up ads

Hi Admin, I have started to suffer from Ad Choices and Criteo pop ads at the bottom of the screen when I load EDF or change sections between EDF. I'd be grateful if you can advise if this is something I can do and if so how? Or if this is generated at your end.

Thanks

J

I came across this nuisance yesterday after switching to Opera. It was really irritating. Every time I minimised the bottom-of-page popup panel it reappeared when I moved to a different forum page. In Opera the remedy is easy. Go to menus Opera | Settings | Privacy protection, and activate the Block Ads option. That still allows the RH panel Forum Sponsors ads, so no harm to forum revenue. When I tried reproducing the nuisance just now, the popup panel appeared at bottom of page but is now void of ads, so maybe Admin is fine-tuning. In Firefox I couldn't get the popup panel to appear at all, even with Block Popup Windows disabled.

The current advertisements below the 'Advertise here' link in the RH panel link back to eu.criteo.com, and on loading forum pages I see that domain name as one of the last flashing up briefly in the status bar as loading-from.

ETA: To confirm: the lower popup panel window, currently occupying the lower ~15% of the screen under Midori browser, is also definitely from criteo.com. Clicking on its top RH arrow confirms that, and asks you to report ads, ie provide free feedback, as "Not interesting", "Repetitive", "Not appropriate" or "Ad design issue".

I also have recently started getting them and I use Edge. My adverts are showing underwear. What is odd is that my browser settings should block ads and pop ups but this one seems to persist. Like Jazzer I don't get it on any other websites.

In the meantime, be aware that some variability in apparent effectiveness of ad blockers might be due to differences in the rate of updating their filter lists, or to their configuration settings. AdblockPlus has, for example, a large config page on its Firefox extension page. with several configurable parameters. I only started using it, btw, not to block ads but to prevent forum posters downloading piles of hotlinked images and videos on me. I've now accumulated a hefty collection of blocked site URLs that I can pass on if anyone's interested.

I think any fixing might be dependent on whatever agreement there is between the forum and GoogleAds. In the meantime, as a possible workaround, I've noticed that, when I've not disabled ads on Opera, switching from full screen window to reduced size, any size, seems to effectively disable the bottom-of-screen popup frame.

    • This is clearly far from a unique issue. Somebody posted this on Facebook and it is so similar to posts here I asked him if he was with Tessa Jowell - he said "no, Lewisham".  "This morning on the microsecond of 8am I tried to get through to my GP on the phone...it went straight through to Hold. Tried again. Same thing. Tried a third time...Same thing. OK, I thought, I will hold. 32 minutes later, I gave up. The voice said "Did you know you can now book appointments online?" NO YOU CAN'T...I have the Patient Access App & for the past 2 years it has said "This practice is unable to book appointments online." Anyhooooo...on way back from shops I popped into the actual surgery to see if I could book an appointment in advance...that was my second mistake...Receptionist said "No. You will have to ring up on a Monday morning to see if we have any for that week" "Oh, and what time should I ring?" "It's best to ring at 8am" "But i just spent 32 minutes this morning on hold and couldn't even get through" "Yeah, sorry about that, we are short-staffed at the moment...but did you kn ow you can now book appointments in advance online?" "No, you can't" "Well, there are sometimes some appointments available online" "Nope, no there aren't...looked every day for 2 years and not a scintilla of an appointment..." "Well, you could always ring up at 8am" "You do know the whole system is completely falling to pieces?" Receptionist gives rueful look. In case I lost it and set fire to the whole fecking GP Practice there and then, I left. I will try again tomorrow morning at 8am. And see if Dr Godot will see me...We are well and truly f****d, peoples."
