Alleyns Junior School - planning

I had a quick look at the Travel plan drawn up as part of this expansion.

Alleyns expect to increase the number of pupils by 35-42 (seems low for 3 new forms) and have another 6 staff. Over 40% of current junior school pupils and staff come by car. So this will mean an increase in traffic in an area that is already heavily congested by traffic from Alleyns and JAGS. In addition, they will reduce the number of car parking spaces available in the school which, together with the introduction of the CPZ whill put even more pressure on parking in surrounding streets outside the new CPZ such as Calton Avenue, Townley, Dovercourt and Beauval Roads.

We have seen a huge expansion of these 2 schools over the last couple of decades with little regard to the effect on the local community in terms of traffic, pollution and parking. I hope people will look at these plans carefully and let the council know of any concerns they may have.

It is time all the Foundation Schools took notice of people who live near to their schools, and for once thought about young local children walking to the two Infants schools and the Hamlet, through the fumes from their cars and coaches.

The Alleyn's application has a breakdown of how their total pupil group get to school and most of them could get to school - any of the FS - by public transport.

These days there is a move to walk or cycle - even scoot. Yes I think there were more local drivers dropping off their children in previous generations but it is nothing to do with protecting the rights of women who are mothers, to work. They should be using public transport after they have delivered their children to school. We are much more aware nowadays of the damage done to the environment our children live in, and to them. Create new habits!!

Yes, I don't know when seenbeen's children attended, but mine were there 2000-2013, and through that time the huge majority of parents walked their children to the village schools. It was always an irony as we headed past Alleyns and down the hill to DVI & Hamlet, to see all the little darlings being driven UP the hill from outlying areas to JAGs and Alleyns.

Cycling in to work through Dulwich Village a pleasure this week as the Foundation schools and state schools are both on holiday.

Will be interesting to see what it is like next week when I think it is just Foundation schools. From previous experience it will be almost as good.

It is a universal problem of children being driven to school - but especially pronounced when the entry requirements for local provide schools are not based on distance from the school.

Alleyns is a sub-regional school. Admissions to the Junior school near 100% result in pupils gaining admission to the secondary school - so super attractive to some families from some, for London, significant distances away to get into the Junior School and drive pupils until old enough to use the coach service.

For a number of years I've suggested to Southwark Council Development/Planning teams that a limit of further private school development via a Supplementary Planning Guide is required.
