What kind of shop/eaterie would you like to see on LL?

I would like to see a sports shop, not a JD Sports, but a shop selling cricket bats, pads, balls, hockey sticks, sports trainers, slips, tennis rackets, balls and the like.


We did have one, once; first it halved in size, then closed - suggesting that we can't offer the market for one.

We have two bakeries ? Truly Scrumptious at the trad end and Brick House at the sourdough end

I know this one wont be popular but a pound shop or very cheap general store (so basically a poundshop) would be most welcome. If i need household basics such as bin bags, bog roll, cleaning stuff etc etc, its such a pain having to go to Peckham and navigate the feral youths, beggars, blaggers and general wasters of Rye Lane just to get some of the above stuff at a reasonable price. Im not going to the DIY shops on LL and paying ?8 for a plastic toilet brush, or go to Sainsburys and pay a mind boggling ?4 for their cheapest bin bags.

I remember the sports shop. I seem to remember is was somewhere between the Palmerston and the Foresters.

Didn't it sell Football Kits. ??? would of been back in the eighties ???

There are a couple of clubs in Peckham.

Brick house is nice... one in ED, one in Peckham. There is a steak house called Meet District in Queens Road (Peckham).

I've heard a rumour that there are couple of pound shops in Peckham too.

As fishbiscuits notes - this seems to be about wanting to import outlets which are anyway just round the corner, a bus ride or a cheap uber away. Our local community really is slightly larger than just LL. If you like these places (and I do like many close but not on my doorstep) just go to them. And I'm not sure LL is really right for late night opening night clubs, with all that they bring with them. [Nor are the outlet footprints really large enough]. Purely selfishly I'd like to see a wider range of food - a good Vietnamese, a modern Chinese (not just cantonese cuisine), a South Indian (i.e. Keralan etc.) - but I'm not sure we have the customer base to support even one of these. Oh, and Farmer's already offers good value domestic consumables - maybe not pound store cheap, but very competitive and with a very wide range.

I would like to see a shop or eatery which has been well researched (as regards local needs) and which is economically sustainable - which probably means with a flexible approach to changing customer needs. It needs (based on the high rents and rates being charged) to either sell high ticket or (and?) high volume items. It will need to understand the constraints of small footprint outlets and to cope with increasing parking restrictions which will make it reliant either mainly on (very) local trade, or on mainly bus access. The fact that restaurants seem to be doing better than traditional shops may reflect the area's greater accessibility by car out of normal shopping hours.

Have you actually been to Thailand? If you have, you must have eaten in some truly awful places aimed at tourists who don't actually like Thai food :))

OK... but opening a business very similar to another one that's only a mile down the road isn't always going to make sense, is it?

Well fishbiscuits it does for people who work or are unwell and have no time or energy to travel a mile down to Peckham, Herne or Forest Hill or other surrounding areas. No one implies that these must happen. They are just some ideas and responses to the original post. There is no need to be patronising.

I can only assume it was a joke of some description.


Thai corner is fine for what it is I suppose, but it is just generic stuff... various deep fried brown things to start, followed by red or green curry with "your choice of meat or prawns". It is to Thai Food what Mr Liu is to Cantonese... or what Dulwich Tandoori is to Indian.

Farmers on Lordship lane, just by GBK sell all things household and they are very fairly priced. I call them the treasure shop, due to them selling the most random products.

      I'm trying to be civil, see things from different perspectives and avoid arguments. The grey economy is cash in hand, so no tax to be paid, Chancellor loses out, we all win. Zero hrs contracts must be tough not knowing where or when the next work is coming from.  My position might not be great, but with a bit of sensible weekly shopping, stocking up on best buys etc. one survives and life ain't that bad.

      I'm trying to find a venue for my daughter's 18th but it's really difficult. Most venues don't want 18th birthday parties. We were looking at Brockwell Hall (The newly refurbed big ol' house in the park) but they want 4.5k for a night which has to finish at 11pm. My daughter tells me her friends don't go out till 11 which I think may be an exageration but I get her point. I'm looking for a bar/club type venue where I can have a DJ till 1/2am and that's about it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

      “Fair points, not arguing with you on them” This outbreak of civility between us is beginning to worry me ! im approaching pension age soon enough myself and im sorry to hear your position isn’t great.  But current pensions are not the result of  any 1 year government (they literally couldn’t be) but decades of priorities across multiple govts and voter priorities  21k won’t get your fat these days as a worker. Transport and other costs before they even get to accommodation.
