The Cost will vary according to how far it needs to be moved...

Moving your energy meter less than 1 metre

You'll need to contact your supplier and tell them you want to have your meter moved.

You don't have to go through your supplier to get your meter moved. The costs of getting this done can vary depending on the supplier. You should get several quotes and compare the prices to ensure you?re getting a good deal.

Moving your energy meter more than 1 metre

You must contact your local electricity distributor and gas transporter. They?ll do the work that involves the supply pipe or cable outside your home.

The electricity distributor or gas transporter will usually charge at least ?400 for the work, but it could be over ?1,000/ -

it depends on how much work needs to be done.

Not recently, about 12 years ago and it cost more than ?1,000 then.

Then it was Transco. You need to tell them the distance and location you wish to move it from and to. It costs so much a metre. In our case the gas supply needed re-routing from the street. They used a 'mole' which punched a tunnel through our front garden to outside the house and moved the meter to near the front door. That is one cost.

You can use your own gas safe plumber to re-route your pipe work internally and he/she can connect to the re-positioned gas meter. That is another cost.

Carpets and floor boards might need to come up for re-directed pipe work/plumbing so good planning is recommended.

Good luck and budget accordingly.

Edited to say we also moved our electricity meter at the same time but that's another story of an expensive experience.

Hi, we moved ours about 2 years ago from inside the house, under stairs to outside as we wanted an under stairs loo. It was around ?900. It actually was fairly easy to arrange. We had to contact Southern Gas Network (I think that was the name - got the contact from our gas supplier). We just booked a slot, with 3 or 4 weeks notice. If I recall correctly they won't provide any new pipe work in your house so you have to arrange for your own plumber / gas engineer to come that day to make sure it all works. What I would say is we thought it was going to be a total nightmare doing this but in the end it really was not (except for the price).

I looked into it a year or so ago.

The people I spoke to were very helpful but in the end I decided it just wasn't worth the cost just to get more space in my understairs cupboard, especially as the electricity meter was there as well, and the fuse board or whatever the modern version is called.

    • In the park this morning I spoke to one of the workers who's been there years, he told me there is a cherry tree which is diseased which is due for removal,  but it is in the wooded area. So it seems there is confusion over which cherry tree? So I think we do need to keep our eyes on what is happening in the park and question things that don't seem right and contact either FoPRP, the park manager or our councillors to make sure mistakes don't happen.
