I doubt elfn safety has anything to do with it Atila

Far more to do with the risk of parents of a child suing the store for.. oooh I dunno, having floors that are too hard or something. So nobody from a government agency or internal tesco's "health and safety" is preventing this - but accountants at the firm have asessed the likelyhood of being sued by customers and advised staff to not let it get that far

So blame the customer, not elf n safety

Now here's a true story which really does, in my view, demonstrate the crazy world of H&S that dominates our lives. A sub contractor was called in to repalce a circular flourescent light in the gents in my office. The guy came in and said that before fitting in, not only would he have to provide a qoute but he would also have to provide a risk assesment and a method statement. ::o Speechless.

I wish I wasn't but this is not a wind up. The guy was apparently asked to do so by our H&S Department as it is apparently not negotiable and is asked for on every job conducted by sub contractors. You couldn't make it up could you?

Oh dear lord. I've got a similar thing but not as mad as yours. One of our stand-alone filing cabinets needs the shelves re-installing. The shelves have been taken out and placed on top of the cabinet for some reason. All that needs to be done is for me to get a very small step-ladder, get the shelves down, put them in. I'm not allowed. I need to wait three weeks until our nomadic handyman comes round again. I might just do it when nobody's looking and pretend it was the shelf fairy.

It's that time in the afternoon - I fancy a nice cuppa. Better go and prepare a method statement on boiling a kettle. Must go - I'm suddenly busy.

Whilst I can see where you're coming from to a degree Sean it is more 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, A few customers borrowing from the US started our litigious(sp?) culture but big corporations and councils have reams of people seeing dragons where they aint,,,cos it keepsthenm in a job. Pubs is a great example where smaller less paranoid companies/individuals, such as the Herne, keep things like the kids climbing frame whereas the one that used to be in the dog has been removed courtesy of Head Office. Try and get a babies bottle microwaved in 'Girraffe' etc No chance..smaller private restaurants, normally not a problem. The latter tend to be far more likely to treat customers as adults and vice versa.

I did 'Competent Person' training at work. Those bucket steps that have wheels so you can move them around - technically using one of those is working from height. If you interpret the rules in a certain way, you should be using a harness and a hard hat to use them!!

    • Hey all, I’ve just moved into a place in Peckham from ED  recommending Kyle , who does painting, decorating, interior design and some carpentry  I needed some plastering done and for the whole house to be painted ( internally)  Kyle really took time and I’m super happy with the result, he kept his space clean which I appreciated  He kept me in the loop as to his progress  We are now discussing him coming to build me a custom cabinet in the bathroom    highly recommend 💫 Kyle Brown : 07300 646293
