I just came across a menu which I picked up from Rosie's on Saturday, and it's actually free range scrambled eggs on toast with chilli jam :)


And the menu I have says it's ?5.50


Possibly you get additional things included if it's a "special". Their salads looked delicious.

Well I would, so are you saying I'm not in my right mind?


I go out quite often for brunch on a Saturday, and I would willingly pay ?7 (except I don't believe it is ?7, see above) for properly cooked free range scrambled eggs on nice toast - with chilli jam - in a pleasant place which isn't my kitchen and where I don't have to cook the toast and get the eggs exactly right.


And I honestly can't believe what you'd get in a greasy spoon would come anywhere near what you're likely to get in Rosie's, although I have only had their delicious cake (yes I know, I should have made that at home as well) and coffee.

I honestly believe the micro affluence of ED has gone bonkers. Totally on a different planet to the rest of us!


Sue and Jeremy. Free range eggs (even the very best) served on two slices of (presumably sourdough toast & buttered), cannot possibly stretch to the ridiculous sum of 5.50/7 or whatever other ridiculous prices have been quoted, chill jam included or not! (whatever the Michael mouse that is). Even if you want to drag overheads into it.


I can go to a greasy spoon and get filled up nicely with these basic ingredients, cooked in a indepedent caf which no doubt has similar overheads to these posho cafes aimed at the more money than sense brigade. You know, greasy spoons which have been functioning for 20/30/40 years in London and not overcharging for basic foods. I would honestly, genuinely rather eat at home than be ripped off for basic breakfast items on the menu in gentrified cafes. People need to stop comparing well established restaurants with greater overheads to establishments that have jumped on the gentrifying bandwagon.

I avoided Peckham like the plague until about 15 years ago. Then I realised it was OK. Dunno why our country cousins need to compare their dull modern town with our far more interesting neighbours. Here are some better ones, Grantham, Grimsby, Reditch, Kirkby, Warrington.

Why don't you go and live somewhere else?


Somewhere where there are just crap cheap horrible caffs which nobody would want to eat in unless they were desperate or very hung over?


You are in a time warp. Streatham in the sixties with the Golden Egg :))

Some of these greasy caf?s (esp. the cheapest ones) are serving highly processed food stuffs as meat ie. bacon, sausage so fill yourself up on it by all means, but you're poisoning your body.

I love a greasy brekky myself, but now that the world has moved on and has better offerings I would always prefer such a meal in one of the non-greasy caf?s. Just to get a better product (in quality, taste).

You owe it to yourself to not just pile shite down your throat because it's 'cheap'.

My shop was at 13 upland Road.. Previously a Tanning Shop... and for decades before a Cycle Shop...

The other half of the shop was a Damp Proofing company..

I was there in 1993.. My company was called Seasonal Supplies Ltd.

The shop was a bit isolated and I was paying ?750.00 a month. rent.. 23 years ago.

Trade was slow and I did not want to take on the 14 year lease so I left and the shop was turned into 2 flats.

Now a new business is there..


Northcross / Uplands Rds were deserted back then with no market.. and few shops...

Wrong place.. Wrong time..


I worked as a Temp driver for Dial-a Ride then spent another 14 years back in Telecomms.

You cannot possibly know all the details and specific origin of an ingredient used in a cafe. Simply because a cafe looks posh and friendly and most importantly clean, cannot lead you to believe that the food served is of a different quality or standard than something you could get elsewhere. Or can it? This is ED so it wouldn't surprise if it did.


Fried breakfasts are bad for you in excess, as is anything. I'm sure if you had organic eggs on sourdough toast every day for a year and nothing else beside you'd be considered to be unhealthy and consuming a poor diet. Unless you cook the food yourself, from scratch and know the origin and facts about the food you can't possibly use the argument that food served in establishment A (which charges more) is better than food served in establishment B (which is a greasy spoon and therefore must be terrible and processed). You are kidding yourself if you believe this to be true.

The law's there for such things


And come on, what's that 'proper' cafe I love in Bellenden called, is it Crossways? The place where the sausages are the exploding micro minced slightly dextrose sweet porky rusk type. Utter crap but so cheap it's hilarious


Now we can't compare that kind of 'like with like' can we, I'm all for kidding myself to some degree, but let's have it right, hang over or no hangover , that stuff scores high on the crap-o-meter

Well if you can't tell the difference between decent food and rubbish food, by all means continue eating the crap.


The places selling decent food were meant for people who appreciate it and are willing to pay a bit more for it.


If you don't and you aren't, fine. All the easier for the rest of us to get a table without having to wait :)

    • The top front tooth has popped out.  Attempted to fix myself with repair kit bought from Boots, unfortunately it didn’t last long.  Tooth has popped out again.  Unable to get to dentist as housebound but family member can drop off.  I tried dental practice I found online, which is near Goose Green, but the number is disconnected.   The new dental practice in FH (where Barclays used to be) said it’s not something they do.  Seen a mobile dental practice where a technician comes to your home and does the repair but I’m worried about the cost. Any suggestions please? Thank you 
    • So its OK for Starmer to earn £74K/annum by renting out a property, cat calling the kettle black....... Their gravy train trundles on. When the Southport story that involves Starmer finally comes out, he's going to be gone, plus that and the local elections in May 2025 when Liebour will get a drumming. Even his own MP's have had enough of the mess they've made of things in the first three months of being in power. They had fourteen years to plan for this, what a mess they've created so quickly, couldn't plan there way out of a paper bag.   Suggest you do the sums, the minimum wage won't  be so minimum when it is introduced, that and the increase in employers national insurance contributions is why so many employers are talking about reducing their cohort of employees and closing shops and businesses.  Businesses don't run at a loss and when they do they close, its the only option for them, you can only absorb a loss for so long before brining the shutters down and closing the doors. Some people are so blinkered they think the sun shines out of the three stooges, you need to wake up soon. Because wait till there are food shortages, no bread or fresh vegetables, nor meat in the shops, bare shelves in the supermarkets because the farmers will make it happen, plus prices spiralling out of control as a result of a supply and demand market. Every ones going to get on the gravy train and put their prices up, It happened before during lockdown, nothing to stop it happening again. You don't shoot the hand that feeds you. Then you'll see people getting angry and an uprising start to happen.  Hungry people become angry people very quickly. 
    • Eh? Straight ahead of what?  If you turn left at Goose Green, as you also posted above, you end up at the library. Then the Grove. Then, unless you turn right at the South Circular, you end up at Forest Hill!
