shoshntosh
was in Rocca last night when there was a very loud explosion that shook the building considerably (around 8.30). The alarms then went off and we were evacuated from the building. It remains closed today. Anyone know what happened? Sue
No, but if no police came I guess it was gas rather than bomb? How frightening. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/97359-technically-dulwich-village-but/#findComment-971729 Share on other sites

Bob Buzzard
Where does Dulwich Village end and East Dulwich start, and where does East Dulwich end and Peckham start, and where does Peckham Rye end and Nunhead start? I need to know as I generally only want to do my everyday activities in East Dulwich and Reckham Rye. Thanks. DulwichFox
Who actually knows.. ? People just open up a new Pop-Up and then decide where it is according to where is #Trending at the time.. #Peckham seems to be the place to be at the momment.. #East-Dulwich is on the decline.. #Nunhead is definately on the up.. Louisa
The lines tend to be drawn based on postcode boundaries. So technically, Adys RD is the dividing line between ED and Peckham. In a border context, I think someone living in Commercial Way would be unlikely to class the Bellenden end of Peckham as 'true Peckham', just as someone living on Friern would be unlikely to class Ondine as 'true ED' etc. It appears ED has now lost its edgy trend as the bland brigade has successfully transformed ED into Barnes the second. So yeah all the cool kids are in Peckham (for now). Louisa. DulwichFox
M&S coming to East Dulwich gives it a bit of a Richmond touch.. but Richmond is by the River and has boats and the planes fly lower and are noisier.. and Richmond has a Green where they play cricket.. and has a tube station. East Dulwich is nothing like Richmond.. The 37 bus used to run directly between East Dulwich and Richmond but doesn't any more. But the planes that pass over East Dulwich also pass over Richmond a few minutes later.Funny that.. init ?DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/97359-technically-dulwich-village-but/#findComment-972651 Share on other sites
Bob Buzzard
What about putting differently colored strings from the lampposts to signify the borders? I like going to the Gowlett - am I correct in presuming that is still in the ED / PR area? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/97359-technically-dulwich-village-but/#findComment-972676 Share on other sites
Louisa
Bob Buzzard I would assume the Gowlett is within the SE15 postcode area and is therefore Peckham (technically speaking), but it certainly has a lot more in common with ED/Bellenden than it does hardcore Peckham (Peckham Hill ST north). Why do you propose using strings on lampposts? Is Google on the average smart phone not good enough for boundary definition? Where is edhistory when needed. Louisa. Bob Buzzard
Well string would provide a good border reference point without having to get your phone out. I suggest blue string for Dulwich, yellow for ED and red for Nunhead. Could have green for Camberwell. So that might trigger a turf war in Dulwich. But I guess it's also the colour of Dulwich College, and they do have a cadet force so would probably win. You haven't specified a colour for Peckham. Is that because it is instead defined by the singular scent of Rye Lane? (On that note, has anyone else noticed that the "vomit cheese" smell immediately outside Peckham Rye station has disappeared in the last few weeks? I don't miss it!) Bob Buzzard
Has anybody definitively defined the borders of ED yet? I want to know as I want to 'beat the bounds'on my daily dog walk so can develop a more nuanced sense of place. goosey-goosey
I do wish people would start using the CORRECT name for the Bellenden/Gowlett area :-). It's not Peckham. It's Peckham Rye, peeps. So say the estate agents so it must be true..........Anyway, I hope the mysterious explosion in DV doesn't reoccur. Nothing to do with estate agents! If you want annoying estate agent names for that area... try "Bellenden Village", or better still, "The French Quarter". DulwichFox
Peckham Rye is an open space consisting of Peckham Rye Common and Peckham Rye Park.Rye Lane is the road leading to this open space.Peckham is a vast area and has 2 stations.. Queens Road Peckham and Peckham Rye (due to it's proximity to the park.)Bellenden Road is in Peckham and is NOT a village..Blackheath... Highgate... and Dulwich being the only true London villages.DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/97359-technically-dulwich-village-but/#findComment-984432 Share on other sites
