Shaggy
*Bob*, the way *you* think the BBC should spend its budget is not the point. *You* said that Ross' salary was meaningless. Ross himself said, albeit in jest, that his salary equated to 1000 positions in the BBC's news service. The BBC is a public service broadcaster and clearly news and current affairs fits more into the public service agenda than light entertainment. There is a balance to be struck but the suggestion that the very high salaries that some BBC staff get has no impact on other programme making doesn't withstand scrutiny. They are still large sums and money doesn't grow on trees even at the Beeb. Michael Palaeologus
The BBC's missions is:"To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain"Ross did inform and educate during his Film programmes and the documentaries he did about film and other genres. He entertained through his Saturday night programmes and lets not forget his work with Comic Relief. He did rather hit all the BBC bases. He could also, at times, be a bit of a cock; but not all the time.I have to disagree with *Bob* though, it would take a family bag of Fun Size Mars Bars to replace local news satisfactorily. *Bob*
Not all news is good news. The Beeb has always been bulging with pseudo-journalists and magazine-style television journalists, paid pointlessly to make a half hour programmes for ?200,000 about someone slipping on a currant bun in the Croydon branch of Halifax. Keef
Not all news is good news. Quite right. With the exception of Newsnight, and Question Time (if that counts), BBC news (on telly) is shocking! In fact, I used to be a big Channel 4 news fan, but even they have gone a bit tabloid lately. *Bob*
In many ways, any sort of debate regarding 'good value' and 'the BBC' is a non-starter anyway. Jonathan Ross, who I like, is (was) paid a sum which many consider to be a gigantic waste of cash.BBC4, which I like and watch a fair bit of, is considered by many to be a gigantic waste of cash. Add your own examples to the list..!I like the fact that the Beeb tries to participate, compete and provide at every level. It's prepared to pay big for 'top stars' (subjective again of course, but..) and also prepared to stand-up for a programme about obscure German electro-pop which will only be seen by four people. Chip away at either end of this spectrum and all we'll be left with is Adrian Chiles interviewing Myleene Klass.. followed by local news. *Bob*
You got in there before me, Keef. But it's a useful contribution from Atila, if only to (unwittingly) underline the point that what people are 'worth' is entirely subjective - and thus comparisons are futile. You obviously have an opinion of your own self worth which is higher than anybody else's opinion of you. What I'm saying is it's obsecne that a prick like Ross gets paid that money for doing what he does. What value does he actually bring to society, does he save lives, tend the sick, course her doesn't. He's a very luck man to get what he has for as long as he has for fcuk all. YES I AGREE. But this thread is about JONATHAN ROSS not FOOTBALLERS (the bold type is just to make it clearer for you) You were the one who stated that his wages should be taken in to context. HIs wages in the context of some poor bastard living on the street are OBSCENE, the poor sod earning ?4.50 and hour and his millions, is OBSCENE. Clear enough? He is hugely over rated. Anyone who has got away with his with lack of talent and unfunny shows for as long as he has, must look up every day and say "somebody up there loves me". Either that or you're being abrasive for the sake of it. Just tell me this, in the scheme of things, and bearing in mind, I'll say it agin, this thread is about JONATHAN ROSS, not FOOTBALLERS, do you think it is ok for some one like him, regardless of personal preference, to earn (I use that word in the loosest possible way) what he does while some poor sod, lets' say in manufacturing, earns ?4.50. *Bob*
We live in a part of the world where people earn what other people are prepared to pay them. It's not the same as 'worth', or 'deserve' but nonetheless that's how it is. Whether it's 'ok' or 'not ok' depends on how you feel about what they do. Musicians, Film Stars, Bankers, Television presenters, Sportsmen.. it's all the same. My Grandad delivered bread for half of his life and and died in his council house, more or less penniless. But he loved Fred Astaire and thought him entitled to every million he got. Just for dancing about and stuff. I don't know what you do, Atila, but if someone was prepared to offer you six million quid a year to do it, I reckon you'd be inclined to say yes. Huguenot
Lost as I am, in the nether regions of n'erdowell, Ross is a loss. Mind you, after getting edited to nothingness, I'd have farted in their general direction too.Having said that, watching Atila squirm is worth 6m. *Bob* I'm sorry you don't get a licence fee. *Bob*
My Gran, on the other hand - not much of an admirer of Fred - was a big fan of Norman Collier, who made a tidy sum in the 70's and 80's with a television routine consisting of him pretending that his microphone didn't work properly. I think I like Ross more than Norman Collier, but don't doubt that Fred is more talented than the pair of them. That said, I don't know how Fred would have managed a popular Saturday morning radio show and wouldn't give Ross five minutes in a working men's club in Doncaster.
