PeckhamRose
They can't find the source of the gas leak.So they keep on digging.... James Barber
With sub zero temperatures I don't believe concrete sets. Every at just above zero temperatures concrete setting must be slow. This must be severely limiting the speed of reinstatement and cause much of the delays - unless a road works conrete setting expert on the Forum can advise otherwise? skidmarks
Yep you are correct, concrete should not be poured as ice crystals will form, also, the asphalt surface course can not be laid at these temperatures, also the plastic gas pipes are heat welded together which would be very difficult in this wet and cold weather Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/9328-temporary-traffic-lights-east-dulwich-roadpeckham-rye-junction/page/2/#findComment-285424 Share on other sites
trentk69
So, we could have to suffer this terrible disruption until the weather warms up? AcedOut
Concrete will freeze at around -6C. At -1C it will take around 19 hours to set.But heat blankets can be used. Penguin68
I believe that adding a plasticiser to concrete (and mortar) mixes - at home as a DIY solution washing-up liquid works - also can avoid problems of ice crystals etc. forming in the cold. Timster
It's okay. There were a couple of blokes pottering around in a big hole this morning. They looked like they had it all under a control. I reckon it should be back to normal by June. skidmarks
Southern Gas Networks must be a bit stretched, they appear to have quite a few leaks at the mo. They now have a big hole halfway down Peckham Rye east side with no smoking signs. reetpetite
Its been there all week and getting bigger ,but I must say they have been working all day(other than breaks in the van) I keep expecting to come home to no gas but so far its been ok. trinity
But the problem is not so much the hole but the phasing of the lights. At least it was when I last tried that junction a few weeks ago. Let them dig to their hearts content but get them to change the lights. skidmarks
They are temporary signals you cannot phase them like the permanent signals owing to limitations in the equipment and lack of signage on the temporary signals to display banned turns and exceptions.Temporary signals also lack any features like the fixed signals to vary their timings dependant on demand, which is making the problem worse. AcedOut
skidmarks - that's not true! They can of course be phased more efficiently. Admittedly now, North and South traffic flow will not be able to move at the same time now (since only one lane is available now), although I don't understand why East and West cannot (as was allowed with the permanent set).Temporary lights can come with sensors to allow for dynamic phasing - they just haven't bothered. skidmarks
Ok you obviously know more than me as it has been a number of years since I played with temporary signals. This is how I remember the phase controller for portable signals looking for 4-way control (Picture). I cannot see how you link two phases to be green at the same time without the conflict light coming on. Timster
When I looked this morning the size of the hole on the corner was such that you could only have traffic going in one direction north and south and east and west. SteveT
It didn't seem so long ago when they would work around the clock to sort out a busy road junction, those were the days. tomchance
I noticed they recently put up a little sign on the West part of East Dulwich Road informing us that it's not a pedestrian crossing. You wouldn't have thought it would be all that hard to make it safe and suitable for pedestrians.
