HI all

Here is an Xmas tree story..just for the sake of it!! Followed by an environmental question!

Back in the 1970's I was working in the Forestry Commission in North Wales,as a chain saw operator. Trees are planted very close together at first, so that the branches will quickly close the gap between them, and the trees will rush upwards in competition for the light, so growing wood very quickly.

An enterprising thief....(probably a worker too!) parked up a large trailer and took out one in every five trees, in a distant part of the Clocaenog Forest. The newly opened gaps were quickly closed by the trees, and since the plantation was far from habitation etc, no one knew for several years.

Good story...but it raises the question; How do you know how "cocher" your tree was? Did you ever ask the vendor where they got the tree from? And did it come from a sustainable source? The latter is a very relevant question since the Forestry Commission is much less a paper pulp supplier these days, more of a conserver and land holder. There is much less plantation of evergreens in the UK, and most of the planting that is carried out in the UK, is by Private owners or companies with tax breaks still in mind. So, what is the carbon footprint of trees that are probably imported, and very quickly disposed off?

For some East Dulwich residents who have never used the garden recycling collections that come fortnightly or who have lost track of when the next one will be in the New Year:

The Mrs took ours down and stufed in straight in the brown bin. I see it and comment "there is no way the council will take it away like that, you'll need to chop it up, I'll get you the saw!!!".

I didn't realy get her the saw, but she had the last laugh when the following day it was already gone!! Good ol' Council.

I called Southwark Council as i couldnt recall the day they normally pick up the garden refuse only to be told that they didnt take christmas Trees , when i pointed out that on their own web site they said they did and also a Liberal Democrat Councillor for East Dulwich Ward had indicated that on here they did .Finally he gave me the info which would have been 10 days time, he then informed me it was easier to organise a special pick up BIG Refuse collection instead , which i have now done , i asked whether they would also take my neighbours , but no my neightbour would have to organise herself so i just upped my special refuse collection to 2 trees!!! such hard work ! and walking along my street today i see some many trees out in front - i doubt that they will take them whilst they are in the vicinity!

    • The name has got a 50s feel about it so in my mind it’s for older people who have very specific concerns. Nothing wrong with that.
    • There is also one for Goose green https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/metropolitan-police-service/goose-green/?yourlocalpolicingteam=your-team Disclaimer: only passing on what I have found by searching. No involvement in organising it.
    • It is a challenge.  These sorts of services are increasingly expensive to deliver as fewer and fewer people use them.  Most people don't want to have to go back to using their lunch hour to queue up at the bank or Post Office.  So the options  are - reduce the service, make it more expensive or the tax payer subsidises it.
    • Surely increasing profits are not the reason? It's more about  preventing massive losses? You can't keep things going at vast expense because a few people still use them. We would still be in the stone age. There are always going to be some people who find it hard to use "modern" technology (which has been going for decades). I would have thought the answer was for those people to learn how to do the things they need to do? I'm sure lots of help must be available?  I'm one of the ancient ones, and around the end of the nineties I went on a free course to be taught how to go online and use the internet. It was quite a steep learning curve, but so is learning anything new. So in previous years was learning to use a PC and word processing. So was learning Excel and spreadsheets.  If you need to use something, you have to learn how to do it! Some people may not have the mental  capacity to do this, but in that case surely they will be getting support in other areas of their daily life already? And as regards the possible  closure of the crown post office (note - possible) we don't know what alternative arrangements may be made should this happen, so it seems a bit premature to be protesting about it at this point.
