Pinocchio - this thread has gone on long enough for you, as the OP, to be saying what that compromise should be. You came on here asking for advice and you've received some really good advice. The bottom line is that your neighbours do not need to compromise and any "give" on their part will be voluntary and entirely dependent upon your diplomatic skills.

Frankly that last comment you made was appalling and if you go to your neighbours with that sort of attitude they will no doubt shut the door in your face and I wouldn?t blame them.

That is my point, the neighbours don't need to compromise, but in that case neither should I if it didn't suit me. hence my comment.

I agree that most the advice has been useful, except for a few comments made by certain individuals, again the reason why I made my point.

Either way, thanks to you all for the useful advise provided. I have managed to get a few quotes from joiners and carpenters who will start the work at the begining of the new year.

Pinocchio, have you ever considered that by having wooden floors you are almost certainly pissing off your downstairs neighbours bigtime? Also have you checked the terms of your lease - most contain a clause that require carpet, at the least, as soundproofing measures.

Hi

Yes I have, but as the wooden floors are carpeted everywhere except the bedroom and bathroom it's not actually Peeing them off.

They too have wooden floors and like to walk with high heels on, which makes a loud noise when they walk, but we compromise.

The lease does not stipulate not having wooden floors. However if need be we can add that to the lease with a no smoking clause then we can all be happy.

No you wouldn't all be happy because your neighbours are smokers. For compromise to be successful you need to understand the other person's perspective and I don't think your grasping it.

Your neighbours are NOT disrespecting you. They are not smoking to annoy you or disrespect you; they are smoking because they are smokers.

Daizie - how long since you quit?

I quit 8 years ago and it takes a long long long time to stop wanting to smoke. Even now - rarely - mainly when I've had some booze - I'll still want one.

I smoked for over 20 years and I will say that life is better without the fags. It's hard to stop though. I had a friend to give up with and it made all the difference to have someone to call and rant at. Maybe some of you ED smokers should get together and give up?

Not the direction you wanted it to go in then.

Yeah - happy holidays to you too.

I'm off out for quick fag in the freezing bloody cold. And, if I stub it out on the pavement I could be liable for an ?80 fine. Where's an ashtray when you need one? Fortunately, I do when I remember to carry a stubbie to put them out in.
