Of course, one of the things about food and taste buds and personal opinion is that it's all subjective, there is no right or wrong - hey, a lot of people love durian and natto, despite me thinking those are two of the evilest flavours on the planet. Are they wrong? Am I? Neither.Cos it's all subjective. You don't like oysters. Nor do I. But there's a lot of folk who do, and they don't eat them just for the thrill of spending money. Go ask Richard Corrigan, a man who grew up dirt poor and now owns Bentleys, why he loved them even when he lived in poverty in rural Ireland. Can't have been the cost...Snobbery goes both ways. Food should be above that. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/page/2/#findComment-953176 Share on other sites
maxxi
Love an oyster or six - whether in steak, kidney and oyster pudding or alive and naked except for a little shallot vinegar, and i like to masticate the slippery feckers a little rather than just suck and swallow - I'm sure i can hear them scream. DulwichFox
When I was a kid in the 50's, when people went to the butchers and asked for bones for their dog, They were given a bag of lamb shanks FREE. Even though the war was just over and rationing had just ended people would not eat lamb shanks.. Now they are a luxury and cost a relative fortune.. especially in restaurants. Oysters are the same.. Cockles and Mussels likewise. DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/page/2/#findComment-953186 Share on other sites

Jeremy
Lamb shanks are not cheap, but two lamb shanks (?7?) will feed three. Not ridiculous.Big bowls of mussels are around a tenner in Belgo or similar. They are pretty cheap. They're something like a fiver for two big ones. And Indian restaurants quite often have lamb shank on their menu, which is not particularly expensive compared to the other stuff. And you can buy cooked mussels in Sainsbury's for ?2 for 200g which are excellent for fish soup.I had forgotten you could cook oysters, maybe I need to try them cooked and I might change my mind :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/page/2/#findComment-953218 Share on other sites

Seabag
Ok ok, I just figured out the oyster place.Bentley's it isn't, but I did speak to the new guy at the Deli near Biff. As it turns out, he had a fish shop in Chelsea opposite BibendumHe's sold that and has the deli, he's called Manuel and will add a fish section at the backOysters will feature, but not pinks or seafood sticks or yellow haddock, or boil in the bag kippers Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/91196-tasty-bivalves/page/2/#findComment-953353 Share on other sites

Jeremy
Even after it has been clearly demonstrated that oysters aren't necessarily expensive, the nonsense continues.
