I'm amazed nobody remembers!

It was somebody from the "old" Cherry Tree (actually it might have been the pub's previous name, but I can't now remember what that was) who put a fake post on the forum bigging up the Cherry Tree and saying that they were new to the area (I think) and had been trying out the local pubs, and all the other pubs nearby were crap and the Cherry Tree was wonderful.

They used the (what I thought was) famous phrase along the lines of "and the customer service in x was so bad that I felt crushed and devalued".

Unfortunately for them, somebody noticed that their previous post had been - I think - advertising for staff in (drum roll) The Cherry Tree!!

DUH :))

Sorry?

I mentioned that in the other thread because the Woods people are having a benefit but they aren't saying (or hadn't yesterday, maybe they have now, I haven't been on the forum today until now) what the money will be used for.

Whereas ours (and I would have thought all other??) benefit gigs made it quite clear in all the publicity where the money would be going.

I'm not at all clear what your point is about "letting somebody else get a look in"??

I'm all for raising money for charity, the more benefit gigs the better as far as I'm concerned, provided it's for a worthy cause.

But I shan't be doing another one in the near future, it's a hell of a lot of work even with many brilliant helpers :))

I got the Cherry Tree / Vale reference :)

It is a phrase that is part of EDF folklore, but I hadn't realised it had become synonymous with a suspected fake post. I thought people used it in a general p!ss take way, a bit like 'gang activity'. Not to worry...

(Edited to add apologies this wasn't the first mention of the phrase, please skip to the next posts in this thread)

I had a great evening out on the lane, hope everyone else had a good Wednesday evening too. I had a great time checking out mid week offerings of the pubs in ED. It was a surprisingly miserable evening and the football was on, we started by taking shelter from the rain in The Vale which was totally lacking in atmosphere, such an uncomfortable place to be especially when it?ss damp and cold outside and a tantalizingly short trot to the bright lights of the lane. The beer is relatively cheap in there but a bit too flat for me and at nearly ?3.00 for a pint and some rather dubious clientele to boot it seemed to offer very little in the way of value for money. We then headed down to the EDT and although the beer is better, the staff were extremely busy dealing with the overload of rowdy Man U supporters and we soon gave up the wait and moved on. So infuriating. Next stop was The Bishop. The football was being screened at the back end of the bar with the sound turned down so as not to detract from the general atmosphere which was great. I must say I don?t really head down that way much but I had an excellent time. I saw the match whilst enjoying a decent conversation with my friends and then we headed out into the back yard for a fag and a chat with Clarence. I read somewhere that there was a new chef there (or am I confusing it with The Vale?). Anyway, it was excellent, I had the steak burger and my veggie Aussie friend had the aubergine burger, both of which were top notch and very reasonably priced. It really was fantastic. The staff were so friendly, it was busy but not once did I feel crushed or devalued. I will certainly head down there more often. Roll on the next mid week evening out!

    • Helen Hayes made sterling efforts to prevent the closure of the Sylvester Road delivery office, including attending a public (I think. I was there, anyway!) meeting about it, and coming to a demo outside the delivery office. The demo was publicised locally, but only about  half a dozen SE22  residents turned up, which was embarrassing  and  didn't exactly show Royal Mail that there was any strong local feeling about it 🙄 When the delivery office closed, whilst  Helen was still our MP before the boundary changes, she made great efforts to get the service from Peckham improved, including more than one (I think) visit there. Sometimes the service would get better for a short time, then it would just deteriorate again. Some of the underlying causes are indeed due to the Sylvester Road delivery office closure, but I suspect others are due to poor management both at local and higher levels, plus wider issues with Royal Mail at a national level. I'm not sure that Ellie Reeves could succeed where all Helen Hayes's efforts didn't, but by all means encourage her to try! I wonder whether bombarding the CEO with complaints might have more of an impact, but I wouldn't hold my breath, not least because he would probably never see them, and even  if he did, some minion in his office would just send a polite standard reply.
    • I love Dawson’s Heights at night with the lights on I feel I’m on a Greek island with a ferry coming into port. .
    • Lived on Overhill Road for 10 years. Very safe no issues. Had more issues on Lordship Lane and towards Peckham. Dawsons Heights is a gem btw. Just have to get beyond the facts it looks like it could be dodgy but it's lovely.
