Mark
Snorky, you said "Lets have a community centre" and I was simply telling you there already is a Community Centre on Darrell road. You also said "It would help if we had a "community" to stlck in it" If you believe there's not a community in the area and therfore it would be helpful to have one, how would you realistically start to create one?[edited] I've added the following as an after-thought and out of curiosity:Snorky, I can see from a lot of your posts that you have some issues with the current community here in East Dulwich. It would be great if you could please share with us where these issues have come from, perhaps your background and what the old community was like and what it's benefits were. It would help those of us who weren't born or grew up in East Dulwich to understand where you are coming fromThanksMark Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/90-116-lordhip-lane/page/2/#findComment-1760 Share on other sites

Guest
it was a nice try, Mark, but Snorky clearly isn't the the sharpest tool in the box, and seems incapable of stringing more than a few words together at a time. Though I have to say, the above posting is a cracker. Meaningless babble straight out of the top drawer.. more please, Snorky! Everyone got excited when 7-11 opened and we used to buy slurpies after school, and a shop actually stayed open till 11pm!!!!!!! ;o)The corner of Northcross and Archdale was a school!!!!!! (A nice one too, still think that's a shame). The Curry Cabin smelled disgusting (it's lovely now!).There was a toy vending machine outside the Newsagents opposite The Woolwich, which had a big plastic parrot in it, that spoke to passers by!There was no market on Northcross, but the fish van was still there (for the record, I do think that market is a waste of space, and I hate the idea of pedestrianising, but that's just me). There were a massive amount of yuppies in the 80's, and I imagine that had a forum like this existed back then, there would have been negative feelings there too..... Nothing has really changed, I swear!!! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/90-116-lordhip-lane/page/2/#findComment-1800 Share on other sites
Guest
If you knew the area well, you would know that Northcross road has historically had a market from the day it was built. The market was famous for selling fruit and veg amongst other things from the early 20th century right up until the late 1950's. Keef
Okay then, it wasn't in the 80's though. Think I know the area reasonably well, I was just trying to make light of things. batdog
Louisa and Keef,I do not wish to hijack your "online" flirting about the ED area, but allow me to say :Louisa you're right about the early days of Northcross rd and Keef you too : the market there is just a miserable attempt and it is a complete waste of space (td) !!!!! Huguenot
Whilst I agree that the market isn't quite Camden or Portobello Road, you can't seriously be proposing not having it? It makes the street much more interesting over the weekend than a row of parked cars, which would be the alternative? Is the view against pedestrianisation just because it represents change, or do people walking around make the place look scruffy? batdog
Mr H,I am not against a street market,if they want one in Northcross rd it should be aproper large one, not the miserable attempt that it is now. Guest
How do you know that the mosque is inadequate for use, yet all the other churches are underutilised. Are you a religious expert now too Ibo? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/90-116-lordhip-lane/page/2/#findComment-1843 Share on other sites
Guest
I've nothing against a new mosque in ED, minarets or not (the towers traditionally used - hopefully not, er, actually used - to call to prayer). However, from what I've seen living in a various parts of South London (and in other UK cities) local muslim communities are (more often than not) very effective at getting mosques built to suit their requirements.. but there doesn't seem to be much local pressure. Of course Ibo is right in that most of the other churches are underutilised (everywhere!)And I agree with Hugue n Keef etc on the market on NCR. It kinda looks looks nice seeing a few stalls when you walk through it, but needs to be larger and sell normal market stuff. All we've got at the moment are the 'extra' stalls selling fancy goods you get at larger markets. Huguenot
A miranet is a highly reflective device for catching image-conscious fish. They're very effective in our subterranean ED streams. A primping stickleback will risk everything to snatch a quick glimpse of himself. Keef
Huguenot Wrote:------------------------------------------------------- > Is the view against pedestrianisation just because> it represents change, or do people walking around> make the place look scruffy? No, you know full well Mr Huguenot that I'm not against change (unless it was turning the CPT in to a "bar" ;-) ). I just think that if Northcross Road were pedestrianised on the weekends, it would make driving around the area a nightmare (not that I drive), and it wouldn't be what I'd consider a good market..... Frankly, I think a lot of those stalls sell absolute tat, or mediocre cake at ?2.50-?3 a slither!I don't know, I guess it's nice having something there, but I'm not too keen on what they've got... My sister always says she gets filthy looks from everyone if she's trying to walk the dog down there! I think the dog has as much right to be there as the pram army taking up the pavement!I also have to say that the idea of pedestrianising Lordship Lane is insane!
