Snorky, you said "Lets have a community centre" and I was simply telling you there already is a Community Centre on Darrell road.

You also said "It would help if we had a "community" to stlck in it" If you believe there's not a community in the area and therfore it would be helpful to have one, how would you realistically start to create one?

[edited] I've added the following as an after-thought and out of curiosity:

Snorky, I can see from a lot of your posts that you have some issues with the current community here in East Dulwich. It would be great if you could please share with us where these issues have come from, perhaps your background and what the old community was like and what it's benefits were. It would help those of us who weren't born or grew up in East Dulwich to understand where you are coming from

Thanks

Mark

it was a nice try, Mark, but Snorky clearly isn't the the sharpest tool in the box, and seems incapable of stringing more than a few words together at a time. Though I have to say, the above posting is a cracker. Meaningless babble straight out of the top drawer.. more please, Snorky!
At the risk of getting all 'Jermaine Jackson' on yo' asses. Come on lads, handbags away, there's room enough on this forum for all opinions of the rainbow, assuming I'm not mixing my metaphors a la *Bob*'s trawling ramplings with a fine toothcomb, which I just loved ;)

It really wasn't THAT different, the bars were pubs (or shops - Inside 72). Everyone got excited when 7-11 opened and we used to buy slurpies after school, and a shop actually stayed open till 11pm!!!!!!! ;o)

The corner of Northcross and Archdale was a school!!!!!! (A nice one too, still think that's a shame).

The Curry Cabin smelled disgusting (it's lovely now!).

There was a toy vending machine outside the Newsagents opposite The Woolwich, which had a big plastic parrot in it, that spoke to passers by!

There was no market on Northcross, but the fish van was still there (for the record, I do think that market is a waste of space, and I hate the idea of pedestrianising, but that's just me).

There were a massive amount of yuppies in the 80's, and I imagine that had a forum like this existed back then, there would have been negative feelings there too..... Nothing has really changed, I swear!!!

Whilst I agree that the market isn't quite Camden or Portobello Road, you can't seriously be proposing not having it? It makes the street much more interesting over the weekend than a row of parked cars, which would be the alternative?

Is the view against pedestrianisation just because it represents change, or do people walking around make the place look scruffy?

Mr H,

I am not against a street market,if they want one in Northcross rd it should be aproper large one, not the miserable attempt that it is now.

Ibo:

Re: the mosque, I am not muslim so I am not interested in such an idea, but let me suggest you a good place for your new mosque = the ED Police Station..... ( I mean instead of it )

Thanks for the suggestion , Batdog. A much better alternative is one of the many little used churches we have in ED.

I've nothing against a new mosque in ED, minarets or not (the towers traditionally used - hopefully not, er, actually used - to call to prayer). However, from what I've seen living in a various parts of South London (and in other UK cities) local muslim communities are (more often than not) very effective at getting mosques built to suit their requirements.. but there doesn't seem to be much local pressure.

Of course Ibo is right in that most of the other churches are underutilised (everywhere!)

And I agree with Hugue n Keef etc on the market on NCR. It kinda looks looks nice seeing a few stalls when you walk through it, but needs to be larger and sell normal market stuff. All we've got at the moment are the 'extra' stalls selling fancy goods you get at larger markets.

No, you know full well Mr Huguenot that I'm not against change (unless it was turning the CPT in

to a "bar" ;-) ). I just think that if Northcross Road were pedestrianised on the weekends, it

would make driving around the area a nightmare (not that I drive), and it wouldn't be what I'd

consider a good market..... Frankly, I think a lot of those stalls sell absolute tat, or mediocre

cake at ?2.50-?3 a slither!

I don't know, I guess it's nice having something there, but I'm not too keen on what they've got...

My sister always says she gets filthy looks from everyone if she's trying to walk the dog down

there! I think the dog has as much right to be there as the pram army taking up the pavement!

I also have to say that the idea of pedestrianising Lordship Lane is insane!

    • I was in Forest Hill Road today, just past the Rye, and noticed there is a dentist next to the Herne (pub) that has NHS signs outside. I've never had any problems getting NHS dental treatment in East Dulwich, and I get regular check ups. I've been to three  different dental practices here over the years, all with NHS treatment. I think the difficulties are in other parts of the country. Malumbu has a good explanation above. I didn't hear the Radio 4 programme, but I'm guessing that a  radio programme is not going to have time to say where you CAN easily get NHS treatment, and is bound to focus on the negatives and the horror stories, otherwise it would be very boring! ETA: Re children's teeth, I think the major issue is not lack of dentists, it is children being given sugary food, drinks and confectionery which rots their teeth. The education of parents needs to be about this, not just about tooth brushing. And in some cases the poor diet may also be due to lack of money for healthy food. Though of course the lack of dentists doesn't help, if  the tooth rotting can't be rectified by fillings or extraction.
    • Well, I hope you like what you see, the hot air, lack of answers and continual blaming things on the last Government and the made up blackhole, I find are nauseating. The man needs to see reality, because I'd guess that if we had a snap election tomorrow and based on the first six months of this parliament, Labour would get trounced. When the election does finally happen and if that isn't before the people rise up and throw this lot out, Labour will not be voted back in for a millennium.
    • Yes thanks that's exactly the choices I get.  I will block and if somehow they find a way back I'll report.
