wise words

i saw this story on the local news last night and Rod Liddle was denying he was racist etc, etc

when i read the stuff i thought that he must've decided that he was going to go out of his way to be overtly racist - what a w**ker

Rod Liddle wrote:-

The overwhelming majority of street crime, knife crime, gun crime, robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London is carried out by young men from the African-Caribbean community.

Where does he get his evidence from? Is it accurate?

If it comes from a reliable source of police or government figures then it is irrefutable.

Even in it is that's irrelevant - let's look at the racial profile for crime in Teeside for instance and then we can almost certainly replace 'Afro-carribean' with 'white' and look at the whole tone and meaning of the whole horrid piece which has nothing to do with 'stating the facts'....at all

He was interviewed on TV news last night. The program's researchers produced official figures that support his claims.

the stats that i saw didn't - what did you see?

did they also show stats that show that "in return, we have rap music, goat curry and a far more vibrant and diverse understanding of cultures which were once alien to us" as being a fair summary?

i haven't got any stats that show that what he said is true, i doubt that any exist - so i am asking you to share the stats that you have that 'support his claims'

his claims being that:

across all of the types of crime he listed: street crime and knife crime and gun crime and robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London, the 'overwhelming majority' (not sure how much more than 50% is required to be 'overwhelming' but it's far to assume that it's quite a bit more, i think) are committed by people who are 'young' and 'black' and 'from the African-Carribean community'

(and that's not to mention his claims about rap music and curry goat etc)

I was citing stats produced by a TV news program that aired last night, which presented them as support for Liddle's claims. I think it was Channel 4 News: last night's program might still be available on demand or via the C4 website.

With regard to rap music - I can't stand it, but I am partial to a nice goat curry, although I prefer my goat either spit-roasted or "stolen" (i.e. kleftiko-style).

but you're not actually giving any stats?

do you really think that the below taken as a whole is capable of support by stats (were you to know any such stats)?

and that (again taken as a whole) it's not offensive?

"The first of an occasional series ? those benefits of a multi-cultural Britain in full. Let me introduce you all to this human filth.

It could be an anomaly, of course. But it isn?t. The overwhelming majority of street crime, knife crime, gun crime, robbery and crimes of sexual violence in London is carried out by young men from the African-Caribbean community. Of course, in return, we have rap music, goat curry and a far more vibrant and diverse understanding of cultures which were once alien to us. For which, many thanks."

No, I was only citing the Home Office stats produced by C4 news last night. I've no reason to disbelieve them, though.

> do you really think

I've not expressed an opinion regarding the other issues raised within this thread (apart from my personal views about rap music and goat curry) so you might consider addressing a poster who has in order to expedite your argument.

but 'citing' stats involves referencing the source and saying what the

stats say doesn't it? you know as 'evidence'?

do you know what it is that you don't disbelieve? can you share it?

that's why it was a question

    • Time will tell if H&B are loved or loathed, the footfall they get and generate will determine if they stay or go. That's the nature of businesses, they come and go dependant on usage. Examples are M&S, Poundland Local, Co-op, Superdrug, Mons, the chain restaurant/takeaways, the chain Estate Agents, Toolstation, Screwfix to name a few.  As much as people would like to see Lordship Lane remain a high street of independents, it is becoming clear that due to Landlords hiking rents, some are unable to survive. This leaves empty units which some of the chain brands considering it to be worth a "punt". I'd have thought that businesses operating in shops is a better alternative than a high street with multiple empty units, but what do I know, they are just thoughts on the subject.   Take a look at Croydon and Bromley where what were once thriving high streets are in decline.  I have to say that some of the prices charged by the independents are eye watering, and incomes i'd have thought have to be substantial to afford their prices. Personally I'd love a Lidl to open on what was the site of the Harvester, but I guess that would get shouted down, oh the thought of Lidl in Dulwich. Whatever next.
    • IMO, Sealy, the best nights sleep you'll ever have.
    • I don’t know what the shop was originally next to the big St Christopher’s but if Holland and Barrett are taking it over then surely it’s good to have a choice on Lordship Lane? The Camberwell H&B is always empty but the Brixton branch busy.  I remember when the Marks & Spencer food shop was Iceland? Now the M&S is a very busy store and at the time regenerated the high street!
    • Nor would I have done, but it came up when I googled John Lewis reviews. Do you not trust TrustPilot reviews? Even allowing for the fact that many people only post reviews when they have had poor service, 27% one star reviews is indicative of something wrong, I would say. That's 27% of 76,392 reviews. That's an awful lot of people who don't  think the service they got from John Lewis was even worth two stars, let alone more. Screenshot attached.
