As I know nothing about electrical goods, just wondered if anyone could recommend a good portable dvd player that we could use in the car on long journeys with our son. Do all portables just come with a device that enables you to strap them to the seat in front as there's no way he'd sit and hold it on his lap? I don't want to spend a fortune as it won't be used that often but just wondered if anyone knew a good basic model that would work in the car. Thanks

Ours is made by Phillips. Initially, we had the single one that attaches to the head rest but now with two children, we use another model also by Phillips with two monitors (but plays the same dvd) that attaches to the head rest. We bought ours in HK but am sure you can find them here.

Hope this helps, -C

We have a two-screen Philips that straps to the headrests and plugs into the cigarette lighter for power. It's great. I researched other makes where you have to wear headphones, either because they don't have external speakers, or because they were so weak that the soundtrack couldn't be heard over the car noise. I was a bit concerned about this as I think earphones worn too young can damage hearing. It isn't a problem with the Philips, the volume is absolutely fine, and by the time we got to Italy I could recite most episodes of Peppa Pig word perfect.

My husband bought ours without doing any research, not my style :)

We ended up with one that only has a three hour battery life (I would look for one with more but not the end of the world). Ours also came without any way to attach to seat , but we did manage to find a thingy it goes into to strap on the seat.

Those would be my two criteria.

We recently ended up on a 10 hr flight to discover the on flight t.v.'s were not working. THANKFULLY we had the dvd so it wasn't a disaster....... can't say I would ever travel without it again!

Also recently spent a weekend in a little hotel room with one sports channel. Again, dvd to the rescue. (My it sounds like my kid does nothing but watch tv... not true!) But it sure does take the edge off.........

    • Apart from being yet another eyesore in our lovely park the track is going to be 5 metres wide, that’s wider than my living room! By the time this is installed it will be too late for people to object. This must be rethought, even more of our park is being given over to GALA. The council didn’t factor in HGV access when they planned the flood alleviation works and now they expect park goers to suffer further. Complaints might help, worth a try but needs to be before the consultation ends on Feb 10th
    • It is absolutely real, I walked past the site, complete with car and trashed wall, at about 2pm this afternoon.
    • Oh ok, I'm even more confused now then. Have you seen the discussion on the dangerous driving thread?
    • Sue - I promise you that was no fake photo, not sure that I'm even capable to that.  I took the picture about 12:15 today.
