Hi all!

I am currently working on a film for the past year, about Peckham and the many sides to the area. The film touches on Little Lagos, the new art scene and the food scene as well as the history and views on recent changes.

I am currently looking for people who would be up for talking about what they like about the new restaurants and bars etc - maybe you have seen all the changes and see it as a positive - maybe you have thought about buying or relocating from ED to Peckham? Do you find your self going to Peckham more than ED now?

Also Maybe you are new to the area and new to Peckham - what do you like about the area?

I am looking for open opinions and hoping to end up with a finished piece full of a wide range of views. It is a long term project, documenting communities in the boundary.

Please do get in touch!

Hi Marcus,

Sounds like an interesting project.I have sent this link to our local residents association ARARA in Peckham to see if anyone is interested in taking part. We've been featured in the Peckham Peculiar a few times. There's quite a mix of new and old residents here so am sure they'll be a wide range of opinions on Peckham.

Look forward to hearing more about your project.

Thanks

Mel

Marcus,

How about a reference to Peckham's 'barrow boy' era which was mostly cockney and working class throughout most of the 20th century. I would advise popping to Manzes Pie and Eel house in Peckham where you will find numerous contributors. The whole Del Boy thing wasn't a million miles from the truth back in the 60's and 70's.

Louisa.

None of Only Fools and Horses was filmed in Peckham. It was mostly filmed in Bristol.

The only Market in Peckham proper was on Choumert Road..

Del Boy's flat in Only Fools And Horses was in fact Harlech Tower in Acton, West London.

Not the blocks of flats on Commercial Way / Old Kent road as some people seem to think.

Those do not have balconies..

Cannot remember any such thing in the 80"s.

Maybe my memory is going.

The only "Riots" if you can call them that, more like street punch ups was when the fair came to Peckham Rye on the last Saturday in the middle 60's there was the punch up between locals and the dumb dumbs, all good clean fun.

i remember it well, though as far as I can recall, it didn't spread to Dulwich, it was mostly 'my end' of Peckham, the High Street, Hill Street and North Peckham estates.

In 2011 I was having a drink - then all the pubs all shut, thrown

onto the street - barricade of police at the bottom of Rye Lane so

couldn't get home so had to wander.

A load of boys had broken into Tesco on East Dulwich road and were

sharing out beer amongst themselves - I really wanted to take photos

(worked for a media company then) - but it would have provoked them.

Strangely not a very threatening atmosphere - just chaotic.

Not really history though (2011).

Hi Dulwich Fox,

Would you be interested in recounting these punch ups? I have a little on the 80s, but less on the 60s - maybe we could walk and talk about these if you did not mind? Maybe you could tell me your feelings about Peckham then and now.

Thanks

Marcus

DF.

Yes the only ruck's from the 60's I can remember was from the fair's with any one including the Dum, Dum's.

50's Teddy Boy's from Peckham, Elephant and Bermondsey had a go now and then but every one left the Rockingham Est well alone but before my time

There is another who remembers these days. You must be thin on the ground

Still got the hair.

You have to agree that those were good times.

Cannot believe that the Temple Bar is now a ? shop.

Magic times. Fear these times are lost on current residents. They think now is trendy and hip. Dream on

Still times move on, good job I bought my 5 bed house in 1974. William Penn must have taught me something.

No way my man.

Local and stayed here. I have no reason to gloat and be bitter.

I stayed when Southwark was pissing on the hood. Can you remember when the west way high way was proposed and the Channel tunnel dig was proposed. I doubt it

No mortgage lender would entertain you.

Property went down the tank. If you had bought a property you were looking at having a property that was unsalable.

Bitter about what? I love the area. Local born and bred.

    • The top front tooth has popped out.  Attempted to fix myself with repair kit bought from Boots, unfortunately it didn’t last long.  Tooth has popped out again.  Unable to get to dentist as housebound but family member can drop off.  I tried dental practice I found online, which is near Goose Green, but the number is disconnected.   The new dental practice in FH (where Barclays used to be) said it’s not something they do.  Seen a mobile dental practice where a technician comes to your home and does the repair but I’m worried about the cost. Any suggestions please? Thank you
    • So its OK for Starmer to earn £74K/annum by renting out a property, cat calling the kettle black....... Their gravy train trundles on. When the Southport story that involves Starmer finally comes out, he's going to be gone, plus that and the local elections in May 2025 when Liebour will get a drumming. Even his own MP's have had enough of the mess they've made of things in the first three months of being in power. They had fourteen years to plan for this, what a mess they've created so quickly, couldn't plan there way out of a paper bag.   Suggest you do the sums, the minimum wage won't  be so minimum when it is introduced, that and the increase in employers national insurance contributions is why so many employers are talking about reducing their cohort of employees and closing shops and businesses.  Businesses don't run at a loss and when they do they close, its the only option for them, you can only absorb a loss for so long before brining the shutters down and closing the doors. Some people are so blinkered they think the sun shines out of the three stooges, you need to wake up soon. Because wait till there are food shortages, no bread or fresh vegetables, nor meat in the shops, bare shelves in the supermarkets because the farmers will make it happen, plus prices spiralling out of control as a result of a supply and demand market. Every ones going to get on the gravy train and put their prices up, It happened before during lockdown, nothing to stop it happening again. You don't shoot the hand that feeds you. Then you'll see people getting angry and an uprising start to happen.  Hungry people become angry people very quickly.
    • Eh? Straight ahead of what?  If you turn left at Goose Green, as you also posted above, you end up at the library. Then the Grove. Then, unless you turn right at the South Circular, you end up at Forest Hill!
    • yes I’ve spotted this too — it’s near me and I’m very intrigued to see what it’ll be 👀👀👀👀
