Best fibre broadband - had enough of Virgin!!

I'm with BT (Infinity) near the Cherry Tree, I actually get the 38MB advertised! All providers that use a BT Landline (aka BT Openreach) will provide similar speeds, either 'up to' 38MB or 76MB. However cheaper ones will "throttle" at peak times. BT and Sky don't (from my experience of both!)

Check here: https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ - you can search by address if you don't have a BT line.

Stupid question but I don't know much about this.

Would wifi also improve, or is that a completely separate issue?

I've got places in my house where I can't get a signal, including my music system, so I can't rip CDs because it can't connect to the internet to get the details. Well, I could, if I could be bothered to spend hours inputting the track titles manually .....

My present broadband provider says it's nothing to do with them, even though they sent me the router!!

Yeh thanks JohnL, I have seen these. I guess if I buy one from Amazon at least I could return it if it didn't work for me.

But Plusnet claimed their router had a long reach, or whatever you call it, and I'm only in quite a small house!! There's rarely a signal in my spare room, either, which is irritating for visitors.

I'd recommend Powerline kit over range extenders - you plug your router into the mains using one Powerline adapter and them stick another one in a power socket where you don't get a wifi signal, where it operates as a separate wifi hub

    • I have someone from Which Tech phoning on Monday afternoon. I couldn't get an earlier appointment. I am hoping that now there is a visible display, they will be able to get me online and then  remotely control the laptop and identify what went wrong and whether it is an ongoing fault or, if not, whether it is likely to recur. If they can't, or if they identify a hardware fault,  I will have to grit my teeth and let John Lewis's third party "repair" company take it away and deal with it 😭 I'm very grateful for your advice, but when I saw "Windows will restart automatically" my immediate reaction was to think "but suppose it doesn't" and "suppose the screen goes black again" which I know is very negative but I'd rather someone else was there when I did it, albeit on the end of the phone! Meanwhile, every cloud etc, as I have installed Word on my phone, which I didn't know was possible, and I have been editing and printing documents from there.  I haven't investigated whether I can do the same with Excel, but I will see what happens on Monday.
