I know I've raised this before but today in ED I was given a ticket for briefly parking on a yellow line. I don't for the life of me understand how keeping a high street useable and busy during working hours is obtainable by constantly clamping down on illegally parked vehicles. I only used the post office and it's a long walk for me from my house. When can we have more places to park vehicles locally? We have zero car park in and around LL and it's near impossible to park unless you occasionally leave it on a yellow line. I WILL NOT be paying my fine, I am contesting it. People of a certain age should be able to park on yellow lines for brief periods when they need to use local facilities.

I know a 70 year old who walks from Dulwich Library down to Goose Green and back most days, often carrying shopping. Always cheerful and hearty looking.

How far is the PO from your house Louisa? Are you physically unable to walk it? If so my sympathies. Next time park on the pavement though, much less likely to get a ticket.

Or consider getting a blue badge.

Seabag i am old but not ridiculously so.

Lowlander from this side of ED around a 15/20 minute walk over to LL, a walk which I often do but just fancied a drive today as I had a few commitments after. I love walking, I often see people I acknowledge on route. Today I was in a rush and as per, had a number of selfish road hoggers going around 10 mph in front of me down Upland RD which added fuel to the fire. It's more a general point really, 1) why do we pack a car parking option locally when we have a high street so far from the train station, and 2) why are parking attendants so ticket happy when they know damn well some people drive here. You wait until M&S pops up and all the 4X4's from the village pop by for a meal deal fix mid/late afternoon. It will be chaos.

We are a nation of Fines...

Restrict Parking and Fine people when they need to pull over and park..

Remove most of the Litter Bins and Fine people when they drop litter..

Do away with FREE waste collections and FINE people when they Fly-tip..

Close all the Public Toilets and FINE people and issue ASBO's when they get taken short and take a pee..

This is how the Council MAKES money instead of SPENDING it..

Total Disgrace.. and we put up with it..

DulwichFox

Your first question makes no sense.

On your second, parking attendants issue tickets, that's their job. You parked illegally by your own admission, so just take it on the chin and pay up.

Lordship Lane is thriving and rents are rising, so the current parking arrangements must be working. The streets are packed with cars so unless you knock down some buildings and create a car park (like we did in the 1960s and 1970s) there's nowhere else to go

Strange that Nunhead Lane which has Buses and large lorries passing through and has REAL traffic issue

has parking permitted on both sides of the road.. in its busiest stretch.

..whereas other places where traffic is not a serious issue has restrictions..

How would you punish the nice person who fly-tipped a double mattress in my front garden?

Well you have to catch them first..

Known fly tipping spots are having cameras fitted.. and fines sent to the owners of vehicles caught on camera.

That's an outrage! Haven't the council anything better to do than snoop on innocent fly-tippers fine them?

My first question is regarding distances. We have a high street quite a walking distance from the nearest train station, which is a good reason why people do not choose to come here from far and wide. Many people rely on buses and cars to gain access to the lane. If that is the case, why do we not have more car parking options? As rah points out, some more 30 min stay spaces would be helpful for older/disabled/parent & child who need to drive to gain access to facilities locally.

I'm not proposing knocking down buildings, of course not. But we need some relaxation on the yellow line rules on the surrounding streets. I think the new school in the old police station was a missed opportunity for a car park if I'm being honest. Why do we not have an underground car park along East Dulwich Road near/on the trading estate? We have options available but none are being utilised. As fox points out, it's a money spinning excuse for the local council to fine people for wanting to keep the high street thriving. All it does is drive people away. I never have this problem in Bromley.

There are fly tippers who clear out some ones house, charge them and then dump the lot illegally..

.. But taking away a service for which we indirectly pay for anyway in our Council Tax. is a different matter..

.. Next charge extra on top of our Council Tax. to empty our bins.. when we are encouraged to recycle.. ?

.. Same as parking .. Find somewhere where parking is safe.. paint a couple of yellow lines and wait for the money to pour in..

EDOldie you're picking and choosing my points to suit your argument. Firstly, Car Parks and available spaces on roads are essential for some people (including parents with young kids). I didn't say that a car park in replacement of a school was the only option, we have plenty as I pointed out above if you care to read again. Secondly, I didn't ask people to have kids or move here with kids did I? Is it some god given right that they should have priority over land use every single time?

East Dulwich station is 5 minutes from the foot of Lordship Lane. Is that a far walk?

If there was a business case for a car park then someone would have built one.

Look at Northcote Road in Battersea, it's thriving even more than Lordship Lane, and it's pay parking all around there. We should try and emulate that success here in Dulwich.

Yes, I am. Car parking spaces are not essential, helpful yes but not essential. There's definitely an argument for better parking facilities for the elderly and the disabled. I am personally rather against parking restrictions but with the number of cars on the road and many families with older children still living at home with cars these days I see little alternative. I do agree with you that the wardens are ticket happy but I think they get paid by results rather than by using common sense.

Like it or not education is a major industry in this area and because of the very good schools here essential to the health of the local economy. We wouldn't have the very nice amenities we enjoy without the schools. So in a way you have asked them to move here with said offspring and controlled parking to boot. As for a god given right, well I suppose if you are religious then yes.

Fox is spot on. local and nation government always choose to fine rather than address the "problem" even if it's through their own actions that cause the problem in the first case! Invent a perceived problem, raise it in the committee or commons, vote on it & push it through some dodgy legislation. Bingo!! Another cash cow to squander on middle management and idle good for nothings!

Really?! I've never been fined in my life. They're entirely voluntary and people don't seem to be put off.

I suggest the Council quadruple fines. That should work.

Lowlander Wrote:

Well, there's an argument for that too. What if the congestion charge was ?50 or even ?100?

On parking I think higher fines would be fine if there were a little more leeway on temporary parking.

Quids when I want to use the Post Office the cinema end of Melbourne Grove is of course too far for any sensible car user. May as well just walk it! The whole point is some people are in a hurry and can't take a leisurely stroll every time they wish to use a local facility. Not to mention the fact that a disabled/elderly person shouldn't have to park that far away. Can anyone tell me where the nearest 30min waiting areas are to the post office?

    • Helen Hayes made sterling efforts to prevent the closure of the Sylvester Road delivery office, including attending a public (I think. I was there, anyway!) meeting about it, and coming to a demo outside the delivery office. The demo was publicised locally, but only about  half a dozen SE22  residents turned up, which was embarrassing  and  didn't exactly show Royal Mail that there was any strong local feeling about it 🙄 When the delivery office closed, whilst  Helen was still our MP before the boundary changes, she made great efforts to get the service from Peckham improved, including more than one (I think) visit there. Sometimes the service would get better for a short time, then it would just deteriorate again. Some of the underlying causes are indeed due to the Sylvester Road delivery office closure, but I suspect others are due to poor management both at local and higher levels, plus wider issues with Royal Mail at a national level. I'm not sure that Ellie Reeves could succeed where all Helen Hayes's efforts didn't, but by all means encourage her to try! I wonder whether bombarding the CEO with complaints might have more of an impact, but I wouldn't hold my breath, not least because he would probably never see them, and even  if he did, some minion in his office would just send a polite standard reply.

    • Lived on Overhill Road for 10 years. Very safe no issues. Had more issues on Lordship Lane and towards Peckham. Dawsons Heights is a gem btw. Just have to get beyond the facts it looks like it could be dodgy but it's lovely.
