Ant
On a lovely day like today, yes, that'd probably be quite nice. On other days...Have just heard that the new place does have showers and secure bike storage, which is a definite plus. SeanMacGabhann
Tis true that weather like this will seem more pleasant - but I've been doing it for years and it really becomes quite ok in any weather - brolly in one handm pod in the other Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21848 Share on other sites
mockney piers
I took the train from ED to London bridge and then walked up to the top of bishopsgate for many years.By getting a return seasonal rather than a travelcard you save lots of moolah and it forces you to walk whether you like it or not; as I'm often prone to the lazy option that was a bonus.Mind you I got on that train recently and it's ALOT busier than it used to be!! SeanMacGabhann
And twas busy back thenI am long past the "feeling I am forced to take the lesser option" - by now if a journey requires a tube or train I get frustrated at lack of leg-stretching opportunity Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21863 Share on other sites
Bleep
The walk from LD to Old St is quite nice - you get to see the City and it really doesn't take that long at all. I reckon at a push you could even do it in 15. Ant
You're beginning to win me round on this 'walking' that you speak of. ;)Being able to get the 40 from its first stop would be a big plus. Guaranteed seat all the way. Settle down for a read, and then a stroll after. Plus the chance of a shower if need be on really hot days. Hm... not too shabby after all. SeanMacGabhann
Ahhh - I should point out at this stage (and Georgia will back me up) that I will always buy you a drink and lovingly embrace my fellow forumites in the wild - However, I too get on at the first stop and at best will manage a wan smile should you encounter me on the bus - don't take it personal likeI shall extol the bus/walk combo at length later this evening I fear.. Ant
No worries - at that time in the morning a mere nod shall suffice. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21875 Share on other sites
Bleep
I get the bus at the Plough as well, and there are always lots of 40s. Definitely a plus that you will get a seat because as a dedicated 185-er, it's not often that one can sit down at that time in the morning. SeanMacGabhann
The 40 bus, frankly, rocksAlthough for some reason it went off on one around Camberwell today, up past Kennington instead of Walworth RdIt would delay anyone's journey from Ed to Old St ! Ant
Wally Road was closed this morning. Don't know why though. Probably another machine-gun attack or something. Rowie
Take the 78 from just past the big junction at Peckham Rye and that goes direct to Shoreditch - from there it's about a 10 minute walk to Old Street. Not the nicest route in the world, and would probably take an hour in rush hour but at least it's fairly direct! pk
if it was me i'd buy a train pass rather than a bus one - my 1 + 2 costs ?45ish and would speed you to london bridge in little over ten mins and then walk from there (or pay ?1 to jump on a bus with an oyster is you're late or it's bucketing down) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21895 Share on other sites
Huguenot
This is quite interesting: I'd never thought that there were such significant savings to be made if you either restricted yourself to one form of transport, or for one fixed journey seasonal.Who's got a dull half hour to populate the table then???? ;-)No, NOT me! 2Sheds
TfL introduced bus lanes, millions more buses, oyster cards and bendy buses that you can bunk on so that your journey to Old Street takes 1.5 hours!!! Ha!!!!I'd buy a BMW X6 gas guzzler if I were you. boosboss
Depending on the initial walk, Bus #78 from Kings/Rye Lane - Shoreditch - 5 min walk to Old Street.Oakhurst Grove - St Thomas' Bus #12 Peckham Rye/Rye Lane - Westminster Bridge#78 too far from Plough :-$ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21921 Share on other sites
AndrewP
Get a motorbike. You won't regret it. Journey times are very reliable, they're cheap to run and great fun. From ED you can get to Old Street in about 15-20 minutes. giddygecko
Obvious route to me, buy an Oyster, the world is yours.... jump on No 40 bus to London Bridge then get the tube to Old St on the Northern Line... Easy squeezy. I will be doing this route on Sat so will let you know how it goes. I realise at Sat trip will differ greatly from a normal Mon-Fri 9-5 trip but will let you know anyways.Cheers GG Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-21934 Share on other sites
mockney piers
actually if you're going to go the whole oyster zone thing I'd get off at Elephant & castle to get the northern line. For one you can actually get on the tube without having to wait 3 trains, and 2 there's not much bus lane going up borough so the bus slows down significantly. SeanMacGabhann
I would add that the slight extra wait going up to Borough station before changing is worth it to avoid the hell that is trekking around E&C tube station however.... mockney piers
I get the train from denmark hill to E&C (5 minutes) which makes the trekking relatively pain free.It may be one change too many for young Ant though. lorraineliyanage
I used to do this journey all the time as I used to live in Old Street. I would get the train to London Bridge, then the 141 or 21 to Old Street. Avoids going underground that way :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-22597 Share on other sites
Rubby Chuckers
I work on Old Street and I tend to get the 185 to Oval (it's about 30 - 40 minute journey, but you can read or daydream) and then go straight up on the Northern Bank line to Old Street tube station. Door to door, the journey is about an hour. ginjah
If it's the Goswell road end of Old street, I used to get a No 63 (if it still runs) from Peckham Rye Park to Clerkenwell Rd / Farringdon Rd and it was 5 min walk or jump on another bus to get to the other end Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/881-travel-from-ed-to-old-st/page/2/#findComment-24033 Share on other sites
