Has anyone removed carpet to expose wooden floors in bedroom?

Hi everyone,

We want to remove the carpets in our bedrooms upstairs to have wooden flooring. A few questions:

Has anyone else done this?

Can the original wooden floors be used or do we need to get additional wooden slats?

Do you have any recommendations of handymen who could do this sort of work?

Thanks!

We did it and to be honest it really depends on the condition of the boards underneath

They almost certainly will need sanding and sealing which with the right team will be quick and relatively mess free

We used Steve from back to wood he took up the carpet, replaced a few broken boards, sanded then varnished them.

Also agree with what mustard mentions it is a lot noisier once the carpet has been taken up - our long term plan will be to sound proof and put a new oak floor down but for the time being its fine. I don't have Steves number to hand but he is widely recommended on be forum so a quick search should bring it up.

We had our bedroom carpet removed and the floor sanded by Steve and Nichola at Back to Wood (07949 411650)

They're always busy, but it was worth the wait. Our floorboards were generally in pretty good condition (they're the original Victorian boards); only a couple needed some minor repairs, which Steve did. We chose not to stain them because they're a good colour, but did get them waxed (I think!). Incidentally, Steve advised not to paint the boards white because they'll yellow in time.

Steve recommended not sealing between them boards in order to allow the free flow of air from downstairs. Surprisingly it's not been as cold underfoot as I'd expected, partly because some of the central heating pipes heat up a patch of the floor! I may get a rug at some point though.

We're really happy with our new look room.

I am hoping that now there is a visible display, they will be able to get me online and then  remotely control the laptop and identify what went wrong and whether it is an ongoing fault or, if not, whether it is likely to recur. If they can't, or if they identify a hardware fault,  I will have to grit my teeth and let John Lewis's third party "repair" company take it away and deal with it 😭 I'm very grateful for your advice, but when I saw "Windows will restart automatically" my immediate reaction was to think "but suppose it doesn't" and "suppose the screen goes black again" which I know is very negative but I'd rather someone else was there when I did it, albeit on the end of the phone! Meanwhile, every cloud etc, as I have installed Word on my phone, which I didn't know was possible, and I have been editing and printing documents from there.  I haven't investigated whether I can do the same with Excel, but I will see what happens on Monday.
