cn150
What pub is everyone going to for Christmas Eve? I'm planning to go out before I go to midnight Mass at St John's - so would like to go where everybody else will be. EDT? It's not to far to walk then if I'm a bit wobbly. Alan Medic
Is midnight mass an obligation or a religious experience? Being from a Catholic family, Christmas eve in my teens involved going to the pub, pretending you went to midnight mass (to avoid having to go the following day), and instead going to the local posties flat to get stoned with the big boys. St.John's by the way was a place they sent the alcoholics to, to recover. Otta
Surely EDT is a shorter walk than the gowlett (when you can cut diagonally across the green). Dulwich Born And Bred
I have always wanted to go to midnight mass just so that I can say I have been but once I start on the wine at home , mince pies , tin of celebrations , the Bailey's , the Christmas tree chocolate whilst singing 'Last Christmas' I usually crash out fast asleep around 11pm.Is there a big turn out at Midnight Masses? Otta
Yeah there are usually a fair few people.I've not been for years though.I remember years ago agreeing to play the descant to Hark the Herald on the trumpet, only to meet my sister first and get quite merry. It was a rousing descant, if not entirely full of the right notes. uncleglen
I went to a Catholic Midnight mass years ago. I was a sober teenager and the church was packed with drunks and prams. On leaving there was a set of false teeth on the floor (I bet his/her Xmas lunch was tricky). I was going to go to the old St. Barnabas one some years later and mentioned this to someone who launched into a massive tirade about people who never go to church during the year and then take all the spaces on Christmas Eve....so I did not go- went to the Clockhouse instead, (before Tessa and her ridiculous music license stopped the carols there) and have been using the pubs ever since.
