Our house isn't zoned, so I picked up Hive on the cheap in the Black Friday sale, as did many others as we now have to wait until early Jan for an engineer to install it.

I went for Hive as it is NOT self-learning. Our schedule is so unpredictable I felt that we just needed an easier way to tweak the schedule so we're not heating the house when we're not actually in it.

I had the Honeywell Evohome installed about a week ago - so all still very new. I'm sure you've seen the same online reviews that I did, and so far it has been exactly as advertised.

I also wanted to avoid the self learning thermostats (like Nest). I'd rather turn the heating on when I'm on my way home. I love the control you get (down to the room level) as well - I can just heat the living room up and not use energy on any other rooms until needed. The app is really easy to understand, without resorting to instructions.

The down side of the system is that it's on the expensive side, but I can't fault its functionality so far. Have you had a quote for installation? It took two people the best part of a day to install it, so there is a fair bit of work involved. Also, because you need more equipment you also pay more for the system vs. Nest or Hive.

A lot of people don't get home at a regular time due to work/traffic etc, so I get the advantage of switching it on as and when you're travelling home. The individual room temp though is what a bog standard thermostatic valve does.

Two people for the best part of a day doesn't sound cheap, can anyone say what the cost is to install such a system?...

If you have a regular schedule then it's probably a waste of money. The individual room control is more than just temperature. I want my living room heated up in the evening, but not my bedroom. It's the other way around for the morning. My old system turned everything on at once, so both rooms will be heated to my chosen temperature, which is a waste of money. Yes you can manually adjust the thermostatic valve morning and evening to achieve the same result - but again only if you have a regular routine/ are home and you remember to do it.

Cost depends entirely on what you want and the size of your property, of course, but ranges I saw in online reviews were ?400-1,500(the equipment is upwards of ?250 of this cost).

We had evohome installed too- was getting a complete replumb anyway, so whilst ludicrously expensive some of that cost would have been required for standard boiler wiring and if you believe the marketing the cost will be recouped over time through efficiencies.

It genuinely had been amazing for our purposes. You can have the kids bedrooms on just for exact times and exact temps as required. Have just the bedrooms on at night and just living room in day. Heat one room to a very warm temp whilst not heating whole house Etc

the app is very easy and also the radiator can be controlled on the system itself if someone is staying and doesn't have it for eg. Would def recommend.

    • One more while I'm here, although more of the way a word is used, and whilst possibly pedantic it really does annoy me!! "Dilemma" Constantly used to describe any tricky decision, but the definition is a decision with only two options, both of which will have an equally bad outcome.  So a choice of whether to have cake, ice cream or chocolate is NOT A DILEMMA!!! See also "Decimate", which means to reduce by 10%, not just general widespread destruction... 😖
    • So sorry to hear this, makes me so angry that some scumbag thinks they can just take someone's transport, freedom, enjoyment away, and there's so little chance of them being caught or punished adequately.  If you haven't already, register it on BikeRegister and change the status to stolen, hopefully if any responsible person considers buying it then they'll check there first.  Report it to the Police - very little chance they're able to do anything, but it's important for the stats, which may eventually provoke action by the gov? Set up search alerts on Gumtree, eBay & Facebook Marketplace, but try to be as generic as possible - often they are listed as just "road bike" rather than the exact model.  I've also printed out flyers and dropped off at local bike shops in case the bike is brought in for repairs, but not sure how worthwhile that was. Hope this helps...
    • John has done a fantastic job plastering our bedroom. He boarded the ceiling & window bay then plastered both and the two remaining walls.  He always turns up on time and gets straight down to work, and leaves the room clean & tidy after. I thoroughly recommend John for any plastering work.
