innotab / leapfrog?!?

i have a 3.5 year old and as well as his requested lego and superhero gear for Christmas we've thought about some educational toys.

I don't really know much about Innotab or Leapfrog bar that they exist.

Are they any good?

Is it just a children's iPad? am i better getting more age appropropriate apps on my iPad?

what do they actually do?

I think the kindle fire kids edition is a great shout. Currently ?79.99. A lot less than an iPad. And a 2 year no quibble they break Amazon replace it guarantee. Also comes with all he education games package Amazon kids included for first year. We had an innotab. And it wasn't really used as much as I'd had hoped very slow and kids are used to iPads. Mine have the kids edition kindle fires coming from their nan this year.
