Nigello
Southwark is a smokeless zone, so you can't burn fuel or have bonfires that produce dark smoke. Some people don't know this; others do and ignore it! Plesae don't burn fuel that makes smoke: it's unpleasant for most people and dangerous for some. jacks09
pure ignorance here, but, can you burn smokeless coal on an open fire? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/85405-smokeless-zone/#findComment-933537 Share on other sites
DulwichFox
And as I understand it , it is permissible to use some kindling and fire lighters to get the smokeless fuel going. Calsug
Was surprised to see Co-Op selling non-smokeless coal for fires the other day - not sure they should be allowed to do that to be honest. Penguin68
No that's fine - ED residents can buy this to take to their second homes in the country... Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/85405-smokeless-zone/#findComment-933555 Share on other sites
*Bob*
You can burn wood in a smokeless zone if you have 'an approved appliance' (which most woodburning stoves are now). It's not against the law. It should be against the law to sell crappy bags of unseasoned firewood though, as often supplied by your favourite DIY shop, supermarket, garage forecourt. DulwichFox
It probably wont be long before BBQ's are banned.. Think of the money Southwark Council could make in Fines with people flaunting the law. uncleglen
I have a Southwark leaflet from some years ago about bonfires and it says 1 bonfire per month at dusk for 1 hour. Also I think I read somewhere that a Yule log is allowed to be burned over the xmas period (?). Anyway- it stands to reason and common sense that unless we want to go back to the old smogs (and it will be 2x as bad since loads of what were single houses are now 2 or more flats) we are considerate. EDOldie
I don't think there's anything wrong with a log or coal fire in your house once every now and then. Makes the room smell lovely and it sounds and looks grate. Houses simply aren't heated by solid fuel these days and the regulations, which were much needed at the time, are perhaps a little out of date? I think there should be some sort of exemption to allow us to use our fireplaces occasionally. Mind you I'm worried yule log off after reading this. phobic3000
I don't have a problem with it. I smashed up a small bike storage shed last year and burnt the wood in the chimenea! It was fun, smashing and burning is the way to go... As long as you're not taking the mick and burning fires outside all the time then I can't see the problem. phobic3000
Only if my neighbours were burning fires everyday and using wet wood. That would be disrespectful. If people want to burn fires occasionally then that's fine by me. I like a fire. DulwichFox
I don't mind a fire.. and would not report a fire unless it was likely to get out of control.. Having said that if it's illegal then it's illegal and doesn't matter how frequently people have a burn up.
