You can burn wood in a smokeless zone if you have 'an approved appliance' (which most woodburning stoves are now). It's not against the law.

It should be against the law to sell crappy bags of unseasoned firewood though, as often supplied by your favourite DIY shop, supermarket, garage forecourt.

I have a Southwark leaflet from some years ago about bonfires and it says 1 bonfire per month at dusk for 1 hour. Also I think I read somewhere that a Yule log is allowed to be burned over the xmas period (?). Anyway- it stands to reason and common sense that unless we want to go back to the old smogs (and it will be 2x as bad since loads of what were single houses are now 2 or more flats) we are considerate.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a log or coal fire in your house once every now and then. Makes the room smell lovely and it sounds and looks grate.

Houses simply aren't heated by solid fuel these days and the regulations, which were much needed at the time, are perhaps a little out of date? I think there should be some sort of exemption to allow us to use our fireplaces occasionally. Mind you I'm worried yule log off after reading this.

Both those fire logs you can buy (not wood logs obviously) and smokeless fuel make my room smell disgusting :(

I once tried to toast bread over a smokeless fuel fire, and that was disgusting too :(

Bring back the fifties!! Toast and dripping!!

:))

I don't have a problem with it. I smashed up a small bike storage shed last year and burnt the wood in the chimenea! It was fun, smashing and burning is the way to go...

As long as you're not taking the mick and burning fires outside all the time then I can't see the problem.

I saw this the other day and thought it was quite nice...

OAK logs will warm you well,

If they're old and dry.

LARCH logs of pine wood smell,

But the sparks will fly.

BEECH logs for Christmas time,

YEW logs heat well.

SCOTCH logs it is a crime,

For anyone to sell.

BIRCH logs will burn too fast,

CHESTNUT scarce at all

HAWTHORN logs are good to last,

If you cut them in the fall

HOLLY logs will burn like wax

You should burn them green

ELM logs like smouldering flax

No flame to be seen

PEAR logs and APPLE logs,

they will scent your room.

CHERRY logs across the dogs,

Smell like flowers in bloom

But ASH logs, all smooth and grey,

burn them green or old;

Buy up all that come your way,

They're worth their weight in gold.

    • That’s another big hike on the Sainsbury’s mini rolls! I spoke to one of the managers on the day of the anchovies price rise but all he could say was that his store doesn’t set the prices. Very vague and not helpful. i started this thread about price rises in  Sainsbury’s and it’s somehow being blamed on Brexit etc!
    • And the Sainsbury’s own brand chocolate mini rolls have gone from £1.15 to £1.40 overnight, so 22%-ish. I prefer them them to the Cadbury original because they have a lot more chocolate on them, presumably because they’re made in a less advanced factory. I would think that getting the Rizla thin coating of chocolate that Cadbury’s accountants demand onto a piece of sponge is quite a sophisticated operation. Discuss.
    • Another recommendation for Leon. He was able to come out to our electrical elergency within 24 hours of me contacting him. His communication was great and whilst he could not solve our problem, he was able to perform tests to identify this and did so quickly and efficiently. He charging  is very fair and his manner very pleasant. Both of these in contrast to some experiences I have had elsewhere.    happy to put my name to recommending Leon. His number is  07707 925039.
    • Steven is an amazing personal trainer! He's incredibly motivating and knowledgeable, and he's helped me push myself further than I thought I could. In just 3 weeks, I've noticed a significant improvement in my strength and overall fitness. He's not just a trainer, he's an excellent motivator and a great person to work with. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to achieve their fitness goals.
