Bombing Doesn't seem to have worked in Iraq, Also I noticed Those on social media with a gun ho "bomb them" mentality are the same "close our borders to refugees" shouters....Do they not realise this creates more people fleeing now they are being bombed, shot at & terrorised from all sides ?

I marched against the Iraq war against Tony Blair, which is pretty much responsible for the mess the middle east is in today.

And believe me I'm as far from a "red flag waiving leftie" as you could be

They do indeed Blah blah, I'm sure President Assad has his eye on the growing healthy snack market

I'm sure he's working on his own version of Wasabi Peas in anticipation of the war ending

Not heard a convincing argument either way. Feels a bit knee jerk. Pretty sure it will achieve little but to wind up/create more fundaMENTALISTS.

2 genuine questions

1 - if Assad is obstructing a relative "peace" why has sas not "dealt" with him. ive read that rebels are too busy fighting him, so can't fight Isis. Get rid of Assad and rebels become allies against isli.

2- what are we (UK/the west) doing to fight the ideology both home and abroad. Read an article in the times about how academics in university are teaching all sorts of nonesense about Islam, prejudice against it in UK etc, sympathising for IS and giving it a basis in academia.

No reference for this article sadly, but was pretty shocking to see what top u is are teaching.

Key conclusion for that article was - fight ideology with better ideology!

Anyway, hopefully some sensible discussion ensues....

This part is hilarious....'Together with other documents obtained by the Guardian, it builds up a picture of a group that, although sworn to a founding principle of brutal violence, is equally set on more mundane matters such as health, education, commerce, communications and jobs'.

Hmmm. Might be "hilarious" but also just a tad worrying, I'd say.

Assad would have been got rid of but One Ed Milliband wouldn't support Cameron ( for entirely political reasons) so no coalition was formed, Obama gave up an Assad remained.

Universities stuffed with idiot lefties shocker

I wonder whether the civil servants will get final year pensions...

Didn't Cameron at this time want to fund and support a little known group of rebels that became Isis?

Yes he did.

Half the problem is that the sands are always shifting (no pun intended) and it's hard for any party leader to navigate through that. That's why knee jerk reactions are never the right response. A lot of this also has to do with not letting Russia get a stronghold in the region as well.

What frustrates me is that there are plenty of things that can be done to force the region to move towards stability. Turkey and Saudi Arabia are being allowed to do as they please, and in conflict to the wider pursuit of stability. But there is no political will to take either of those nations on. Turkey wants to become part of the EU as well - you have to be joking with the way they behave at present.

I'd also like to know where a government that says welfare has to be cut by 12bn, suddenly finds 12bn to give to defence, on top of what will now be a higher bill for Trident. I think someone above did point that out, that we can find money to drop bombs, but we can't find money to keep the poorest and disabled away from destitution. That needs to be said more.

    • Thank you, Pugwash. That's really useful information. Do you know who was responsible for the locks and keys, or which council department? Could you PM me if you don't want to put someone's personal details on here?  It may save me having to speak to Monica. Thanks.
    • Does anybody know why? Trees aren't cut down for no reason. There must have been something wrong with it (I hope that was the reason). A child was recently killed and another one injured when a tree fell in a park (not in this area). It isn't always obvious from the outside when a tree is diseased or whatever, and I imagine the council would give safety considerations priority when deciding what to do, if there was any doubt at all.
    • It looks like they have cut it down completely now 😭
    • Different people will be  involved within Thames Water. The people dealing with the leaks aren't the people encouraging less water usage. How many people have reported the Barry Road leak? By what channels? What response have they had? When we had a leak in our road which meant we had no water, several people reported it, there was good communication with TW, they explained why they couldn't come out immediately (other urgent jobs elsewhere in the area) , kept  in touch with us and fixed the leak within a reasonable timescale (hours). Someone from TW also contacted me later to make sure my water was back. But does Thames Water know about it? They aren't psychic (I presume). If nobody reports it, I also presume they won't even know the leaks are  there, unless they have some kind of central monitoring system which tells them when there are leaks in the system. To make it clear, I am not defending Thames Water as a company, which I think should never have been privatised.  But there are some things they can't be blamed for (old and disintegrating water pipe system in London) and some they can (possibly, lack of sufficient staff to deal with leaks, maybe due to trying to save money to give their shareholders more. But this is just surmise on my part - I know nothing about Thames Water).
