Asset
I drink wine with everything and nobody said anything about being better than anyone else because of a once in a while scoff at the seacow.I think english fish & chips are disgusting, very rarely fresh fish which is why the seacow is nice. I eat a good old greasy fish supper in a proper chippy when I go home to Scotland. Nobody said the seacow is trying to be a traditional fish & chip shop, it's offering something better. You don't have to be health freak to want decent quality food and a real health freak would not go to the seacow. Ultraconsultancy
With you on the cod refusal, Alan Dale.A few beers with a "seafood chef from Padstow" recently pointed me in the direction of LING for a tasty flaky fish.Is cod kosher? Any rabbis in the house? My jewish chums like their herring and their salmon.UC in fishy mode. snorky
Haddock has a better - more subtle taste and texture Cod is a bit of a blunt object when it comes to fish TBH - but was pushed into general consumption cos of its availability. IIRC, Plaice was considerd a vermin fish until very recently - Sole was the flatfish of choice & Plaice was fed to aminla s not humans but with Sole getting rarer, Plaice weas opushed as the new flatfish of choiceLing is part of ther Gaddus/ Cod family as well Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/837-seacow/page/3/#findComment-22749 Share on other sites
karter
The people at Emilys on Northcross are nice and friendly and down to earth. My problem is that alot of the times the food is too oily and also they lick their fingers when wrapping up the food. I use Britannia across from the cpt . Ultraconsultancy
It's not so long since in Scotland you could get deep fried fish that wasn't battered but rolled in oatmeal - delicious, despite the bigotry of Dr Johnson. Louisa
Traditional chippies are on the whole not available in London, but elsewhere in England, especially coastal places, they are still widely sold to a high standard, especially family run businesses. I can only think of a handful in London, all of which are on the outskirts of town. Having said that, Britsnnia on upland road is not bad in my opinion. Love the idea of a traditional pie and eel house opening locally, although Manze in Peckham has been there since 1923 and still serves very good quality food. Louisa
whiting is great, love it, and it is widely available in SW chippies Devon/Cornwall. One of the things I love about Scottish chippes is the Battered Haggis supper.. it's fantastic.. clare
Elizabeth- they were a bit vague about what they were going to put in their pies (NB barber across road..) so why don't you pop in and put in a request for something veggie ? They are very friendly in there. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/837-seacow/page/3/#findComment-22838 Share on other sites

ginjah
Seacow - fish burnt, chips hard the 3 time i have been. For what you get costs more than elsewhere. It was a better chippie when it was Moby's. Sema's was the best on Underhill Road, it's now Britania i think. and much better then Seacow which is overated just like Ollies, the owner once told me how fussy he was when taking long time to cook some chips, which I found funny because he microwaved my pie. lol Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/837-seacow/page/3/#findComment-24028 Share on other sites
SeanMacGabhann
Any friends of ours who have been to Sea Cow have been blown away by the quality of both the fish and chipsThey also had a stall at Glastonbury which did a roaring trade and I overheard many a happy punter claim it was miles better than any other Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/837-seacow/page/3/#findComment-24040 Share on other sites
Ladygooner
Have to agree - since Semas changed hands Seacow is the best for fish and chips - takeaway or sit down. Louisa
I honestly dont understand this... Seacow is now selling fresh fish!! Fresh fish comes from the sea and is then sent in ice to London's markets and sold to wholesalers who then sell the fish on to the fishmongers and/or chippies/restaurants etc.. The point here is, if you dont go to a coastal town where the actual fish is caught, it isnt going to be fresh, its going to have been stuck in ice!! lol... Why so many gullible people think that because its out on display fresh the guy can charge triple the price for the same product you can get down the road for half the price! it's ludicrious in my opinion, and I also think the quality of the batter and the chips is nothing more than average.. The Seacow is a typical example of a business aimed at people who want to think theyre getting something special!! well trust me you most certainly are not.. :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/837-seacow/page/3/#findComment-24049 Share on other sites

Ted Max
the guy can charge triple the price for the same product you can get down the road for half the price!I'm trying to work this one out, but it keeps beating me. Perhaps you can do the maths for me in diagram form.Seacow has had fresh fish for sale from its counter since it opened . When it first opened the equipment was brand new, the oil very very hot and the quality was superb. I think some of the attention to detail has gone and would agree with a general lessening of quality - cardboard chips especially. The premium price is by and large because you are buying fish that is as fresh as you can buy (in central London) - not fish that has either been long term frozen or vaccuum packed. Asset
Louisa - Fresh fish is not frozen ergo is fresh. Reading your posts I get the impression that you probably would have complained about the advent of the telephone. "what's wrong with a good old fashioned letter etc.etc." Stop being such an inverted snob. The Seacow does not pretend to be an 'old fashioned chippy' (what ever that is). It is serving something a little better and if you don't like it there are plenty of chippys to choose from. Leave the people who do want something a little better to get on with it. Louisa
I actually think thats all a load of nonsense with the greatest respect Ted Max... Sometimes fish straight out the sea which has been frozen within hours is the very best fish you can buy! It retains its freshness, and is in no worse state once it has been defrosted! Fresh fish is just not factual sorry to destroy your illusion, very typical in London may I add.. "fresh as you can buy" hmm forgive me but you've lost me on this one, my uncle was in the fishmongering business for many years and I am pretty sure I didnt ever hear him mention one product being any fresher than the others, especially since certain batches of fish came from the same location! all the London chippies get their fish from pretty much the same wholesalers, so that comment is slightly dubious.. I am pretty much 100% sure Seacow does the same as every other ED chippy, but the placebo effect seems to pull the wool over some peoples eyes apparantly! Asset
In my opinion fish that has been frozen whether immediately or not is not as good as fish that has not been frozen. It affects the texture without doubt. Most chippys - of the type that you seem to favour - are likely to use frozen fish, neither do they serve red snapper sea bream, but I suppose that's just posh fish isn't it and I should just stick to cod. Louisa
Asset, your comments are amusing.. "inverted snob" never been called that before hehe.. you know as well as I do these people are not getting anything better in the Seacvow as they would get at a "traditional chippy" (if that exists in London), but you like to champion the cause for snobbery because it suitsyour needs, very funny, well you can continue being ripoped off, its your money loland... Keef... who rattled your cage today? I didnt think the ED bedrooms were big enough to fall out of the wrong side of the bed in the mornings! lol... anyway, dont take offence to my comments, I just like to tell it as I see it, and it annoys me how people think they can live in their own little suburban London dream world when in fact the same product down the road can be bought cheaper.. its just funny thats all :) have a drink on me!
