I love J Sheekey. It' consistently good and has a lovely vibe and not at all stuffy. (It may be tricky to get a table at short notice...) You don't say what kind of food you like, but Pearl in Holborn has a superb (I think Michelin-starred) chef, and really friendly service. Passione (Italian) on Charlotte Street is lovely, and the service is first rate.
I'll third that, Moro was my fave but in the last year Arbutus has stolen my heart, not just the food but the concept of buying only a third of a bottle of any of their wines (for a third of the price) makes for much fun if there's only two of you.

    • Agree with @Sue the Dog is awful-nice building awful food. We like The Rossendale and Watsons
    • There are so many variables. Good chefs can having bad nights, post-Brexit staff shortages, your dish might be brilliant, your friend might order something that's inedible. In the end I think the best option is just to go to the restaurant which has the best overall reviews. If all the reviews are bad then avoid, but even if all the reviews are good that's not a cast iron gaurantee.
