Help please! What's usual cost of a landscape gardener to draw up plans?

We just got a gardener in and got him to do planting suggestions (for free) and then he did all the planting and landscaping. The pure 'design' work was just a bunch of sketches based on stuff we liked the look of from pinterest. Unless you have acres of gardens and want to do something really high-end seems to me daft to pay a designer separately

Did the designer not take a detailed brief from you as to exactly what your requirements were, and then discuss various options with you before s/he did the final design?

Bit poor if not :(

They did, yes. And I provided loads of photos of things I liked. I also gave an idea of budget and the design I got back was as if the ideas had never been given and the quote was twice my budget. I got the impression my job was too small and too much trouble.....
