Brendan
And the odds on favourite gets it. Although I though Jah was going to make a surprise move. RosieH
Jah Lush Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Brendan, are you saying that Jesus was an> egomaniac who preyed on the unsophisticated and> vulnerable? If not. Why not?I was only saying the other night that I suspect that back in the day I would have fancied Jesus - and I consider myself quite the sophisticate. I prefer to think of him as hairy and charismatic.Still though, that's no reason to go to church (in fact, almost a reason NOT to) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8092-crystal-palace-cinema-campaign-send-objections-to-church-use-now/page/5/#findComment-255882 Share on other sites

bigbadwolf
I quite liked Judas Iscariot. He bit and betrayed the hand that fed him and I know a Private Eye reader when I see one. louisiana
To get vaguely back on topic (but why should I? It's the Lounge after all) Speech Debelle and Florence of Florence and the Machine have come out in support of the cinema campaign. Speech comes from Gipsy Hill, and Florence is a sarf London girl, innit. Some coverage in the Streatham Guardian or somesuch. Huguenot
I notice their ads say something about "taking territories"?If that isn't "control, coercion, capitulation, and power", I don't know what is? I could probably drop the "allegiance" on the basis that this seems more about subjugation. You can kind of sympathise with local people who have no desire to be conquered. louisiana
I saw Alejandro Amenabar's new film Agora on Friday (opens here in UK December). Alexandria, 4 AD. Rachel Weisz IS The Astronomer (Hypatia of Alexandria), representing reason against the backward and warring religious tribes. She just "believes in philosophy". Christians don't come out well. Epic. Worth checking out. Slow start but picks up.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agora_%28film%29 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8092-crystal-palace-cinema-campaign-send-objections-to-church-use-now/page/5/#findComment-257550 Share on other sites

louisiana
The christians in the film do call her a witch at one point. Like science = witchcraft, and maths = heresy, huh? From Wikipedia:Hypatia of Alexandria (pronounced /haɪˈpeɪʃə/ in English) (Greek: Ὑπατία; born between 350 and 370 ? 415) was a Greek[1][2] scholar from Alexandria in Egypt,[3][4] considered the first notable woman in mathematics, who also taught philosophy and astronomy.[5] She lived in Roman Egypt, and was killed by a Christian mob who falsely blamed her for religious turmoil.[6] Some suggest that her murder marked the end of what is traditionally known as Classical antiquity,[7][8] although others such as Christian Wildberg observe that Hellenistic philosophy continued to flourish until the age of Justinian in the sixth century.[9]A Neoplatonist philosopher, she belonged to the mathematical tradition of the Academy of Athens represented by Eudoxus of Cnidus;[10] she followed the school of the 3rd century thinker Plotinus, discouraging empirical enquiry and encouraging logical and mathematical studies.[11] Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8092-crystal-palace-cinema-campaign-send-objections-to-church-use-now/page/5/#findComment-257822 Share on other sites

louisiana
It looks like the Bromley Council planning meeting that will be discussing the future of the cinema building will *not* now be 26 November, as originally thought. 17 December is now a likely date, but not firm yet.The delay is down to the applicant - the church - providing a duff transport assessment (I think one of the Croydon councillors described some of the figures as 'fantasy', and Bromley hasn't been too impressed with it either it seems), so they have been told to go away and submit more stuff. There was a big campaign meeting held on 18 October to which around 900 people turned up. Some video on the Facebook group pages. I particularly enjoyed our local rockin vicar, who read out a joint statement from four of the Crystal Palace church leaders.[head not screwed on today - I just managed to delete the previous post unintentionally] Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8092-crystal-palace-cinema-campaign-send-objections-to-church-use-now/page/5/#findComment-261396 Share on other sites
Chick Pea
The on-street parking survey submitted to support this application was stunning! The agents claimed to have walked around targeted residential roads from 9am till midday on Sunday 12th July counting up all the empty car parking spaces, without any pictorial evidence to back up the survey, they then went on to claim that those spaces would be used as free parking for their client's congregation every Sunday, Saturday and Tuesday evenings. The Transport Assessment predicted the number of cars for a 600 strong congregation would be 45, now that's a lot of people per car. Also the other services and events run by the church are planned for different days and times yet their agent uses data from a Sunday morning survey (everyone knows early Sunday Morning is the quietest part of the week for traffic & parking) to claim that local roads can accommodate their needs. It's also a mystery where the minibus shuttle routes and pick up points are going to be but watch out Alleyn Road and Alleyn Park as due to their width and positioning these would be prime park and ride zones and as this is a very large and rapidly expanding organisation the outlook for not just CP but the surrounding areas would be bleak if the change of use is permitted. Imagine the senario 6 back to back services of 1150 (6750 per day) people each and every Sunday, the majority who will be driving to CP arriving and leaving at same time. During crossover, people arriving for next service and those leaving from previous, we'd be expecting 2300 congregants at any time. The effect will be siege-like for local residents and people who use CP for range of independent shops, galleries, markets, restaurants and bars will obviously go elsewhere to avoid the weekend gridlock. The application is unworkable and unsustainable. It does not meet the churches needs and would be catastrophic for residents, traders and users of Crystal Palace and beyond. sydenhamcentral
We've just completed a 'what if Crystal Palace Cinema' makeover showing a before and after of what it could look like.We have done a few of these which you can see on www.whatifsydenham.wordpress.com. Judging by feedback in a questionaire on the Sydenham Town forum, everyone goes to Lordship Lane or Crystal Palace rather than shop in Sydenham Road. Otta
Awful stuff, but I bet there is no law broken (even though there should be). There was no mention of payment for the "healings", which would no doubt change things.
