foxtrot
Hi, I have put an offer on a house in St Francis Road, and am concerned about the area behind- a park inbetween what would be my back garden and sainsburys, which is part of the estate on Dog Kennel hill- Im worried about noise from Champion Hill Football stadium and also security of possible break in from easy access to garden from park.Any St Francis road people on here who could put my mind at rest?Much thanks, Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8088-st-francis-rd-noise-from-champion-hill/ Share on other sites
Loz
Hi Kay,Not a St Francis Road person, but Abbotswood Road - so I'm very close!I find that noise from the football ground is not a problem. There is a bit on some Saturdays, but only really when a goal is scored. I only hear it when I am in the garden. Can't help you on the park security as I don't back onto the park. It's a lovely area up this end of ED and handy for everything. Nice and quiet, but near to a big Sainsburys, two rail stations and five bus routes - plus, of course, the park. I've been here ten years! So, hopefully, welcome!! TheePope
You are unlikely to be bothered about the football noise unless you are particularly sensitive. The club rarely attracts crowds of over a few hundred and is generally only used a couple of times a week. You can hear the crowds if you're outdoors but your unlikely to hear them through a closed window, and it's only sporadic cheering anyway, it's not a big deal and can be quite a welcoming sound to be hones. The games only last 90 mins so it's really not a worry. If you're really concerned, then there's a game on tomorrow night so just hang about it in the street and listen! Or else go along and it will allay your fears, its a good night / afternoon out actually. Can't really help on the security side, I thought the houses that back onto the park are quite well protected by high walls and lots of shrubbery.Your biggest annoyance is likely to be the dulcet sound of trolley bags being wheeled down the street every morning by commuters! Ingenuity
Hi KayOr should I say hello neighbour!!!We've lived (my gf and I) on the street for 3 years now and the football noise isnt a problem. Lets just say planes are much more of a distraction flying over London than the football noise ever could be. And if you've lived in London before you'll know that you get used to that noise very quickly. As for the park. It's actually really nice having it there. The bushes and trees are very dense and actually provide a good layer of security plus you're not overlooked making the gardens very private other then your next door neighbours. If you want to drop me a personal message asking anything more feel free.Good luck on the move KayPaul Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8088-st-francis-rd-noise-from-champion-hill/#findComment-250419 Share on other sites
lpool
Hi KayI lived opposite the football ground for 10 years and the only noise problem you tend to get is with the DJ's choice of music pre-match - used to be a bit loud at times but may be quieter these days. Weegee
HI KayWelcome to you fellow neighbour! I live on Abbotswood Road and regularly go to the game at Champion Hill. There really isnt too much of a noise problem. The games for the teams there, Fisher FC and Dulwich Hamlet happen at most twice a month and average attendance is around 300. The crowd is good natured (its not rough like Millwall), not rowdy and live in a quiet calm manner at the end of the matches. The only noise you will hear is the sound of a goal for home team (sadly not as many as normal this season) or final whistle! Peckhamgatecrasher
Millwall fans can cut up a bit rough when confronted with bad spelling. Loz
Would a Millwall fan actually know something was mis-spelt? :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8088-st-francis-rd-noise-from-champion-hill/#findComment-250589 Share on other sites

James Barber
The park is called St.Francis. It isn't owned or part of the East Dulwich Estate. Its upkeep and maintenance including litter picking etc is provided by Sainsburys as part of a legal Section 106 requirememt for it to receive its original planning permission. Real straight jacket as Sainsburys is not exactly the most imaginative of park operators. Unlikely we'll ever persuade them to maintain it to Green Flag status and add this as the eighth Green Flag open space in Southwark. AlexM
Hi KayAs per JBARBER - the park isn't owned or part of East Dulwich Estate and the housing area behind is actually very nice! I live on Burrow Road and my garden backs onto the football club. The only time I notice it is on a Saturday, but that's not really a problem for me. In terms of security, *touch wood*, no problems so far although I wouldn't walk through the park on my own late at night! I personally think it's a very nice area. pearl1
I also live on the St Francis 'Estate'. I don't mind the noise from the football matches. It's only occasional and never that loud, but I do have a problem with the noise late at night when Dulwich Hamlet have let their bar out for parties. The noise carries a long way and is loud enough to keep me awake. Not an issue if they only have parties occasionally but I understand they have made an application to have a late licence more often. Maybe others will know more about that.... summerjt
I would state that in addition to the matches, the venue is used for practice several times a week. You frequently hear people shouting (to do with their footie practice) when walking out and about around the area. However I wouldn't have thought you'd hear any noise indoors with the windows shut. If you're in your garden you might hear it though. I quite like to hear them effing and blinding about missed passes or whatever it is they are shouting about - reminds me of when my brothers were younger. I reckon it's an OK area for South East London. And as previously stated, train stations are handy. I recently discovered you can get a train from Denmark Hill to St Pancras - handy.
