Has anyone noticed the ridiculous new layout opposite Alleyn's school? Not only were we all inconvenienced by the road being closed for several weeks but the layout is really dangerous, they've raised the road slightly but alas there's no protection for the pavement. As a driving instructor, I use that road alot, alot of drivers just drive over the curb unaware that it is not part of the road. It's dangerous from all angles and in my opinion a complete waste of money as it serves no purpose and there's very little protection for pedestrians and of course, the school children.

Didn't mind it when I came across it the other day; the old junction was awkward and necessitated a big crane of the neck to see what was coming if driving from the village and turning right. Must've been tricky for van drivers. Noticed however that tyre tracks suggested someone had driven over the newly-made grass verge, as if the old road had never been removed. As for the kerbs - isn't that a nod towards a 'shared space'?
I think the road layout is much better because the traffic on Townley has the right of way at the junction with Calton Avenue which keeps the traffic moving in front of the school with less of a build up. Also, they've put in a more obvious pedestrian crossing where the road is raised which forces people to slow down anyway, hopefully.
Apparently, the whole of dulwich village is to be a 20mph speed zone. New pavements are being laid at court lane, speed bumps in side streets, etc. all courtesy of southwark council. If you were to ask for an extra blue paper recycling bag (which I have on 4 occasions) forget it. Nope. You can just get on with the one that is so ripped and disgusting that the recycling guys are now refusing to take it. However, needs must, please watch out for all and sundry in the village, rich as they may be, for that is where southwark have decided to spend their money. PS. If anyone knows any laws on asbestos removal from a council property i would be grateful to hear. Many thanks.

I agree with candj it seems a vast improvement as the most busy road now takes precedent which improves mobility for the majority.

When I first came across it I thought it was high time Southwark 'got it right' they were well overdue after the pigs ear they made of Half moon lane / village way junction where they changed the precedent to the mostly unused back street.

Nice one LindyL, if it wasn't for someone like your good self being irrelevant, then this thread might have taken a bigger plunge than a pearl diver's cossy.

Sweet.

Ha Ha Hona, my thoughts too..

Lindylou, paranoia or what?

On the junction, I think it is better as it seems more intuitive for Townley to be the main road and Calton to be the joining traffic, however cars turning right into Calton from Townley now cut the corner really badly and go into Calton on the wrong side of the road as the angle is pretty tight - not impossible to negotiate just requires thought.

I'm all for more crossings which there are now an abundance of there!

Mr Asset walking the dog at 3.AM!?! did he have a digital camera about his person?

Never saw any problem with this junction myself, save for the idiots who can't drive properly, mainly mothers picking up their offspring from the swine-flu infested Alleyns School.

Quite why they had to close the road for weeks, forcing me to drive the long way round to get anywhere useful, I have no idea.

Interesting comments.

Approaching from the traffic lights and turning right into Carlton Ave I have witnessed many drivers who seem to think they don't have to give way to oncoming trafic, because the road is so wide they think it's a continuetion of the road they are in.

Regarding the tyre tracks over the pavement area is a concern, there's no kerb protection for pedestrians (bearing in mind it's opossite to two schools).

On the plus side the layout should stop parking on the corners, which would help observation. Time will tell if it's an improvement.

I am all for improving road safety, but I'm not so sure that this layout will help.

Hi, I am having lessons with Nicholas and on my last session we were discussing this thread. To show me waht he meant, we drove up to the junction and I got myself "into position" to turn right onto Carlton Avenue from Townley Road when (just as Asset described above) someone behind me cut across the corner on the wrong side of the road. Maybe he didn't want to be stuck behind a learner :'( I thought it was a coincidence but apparently it happens all the time...and not just to learners.

PS No snide comments about learners please, I'm embarassed enough already. PPS If you are thinking about having lessons, Nicholas is pretty good.

    • Hello I’m wondering if anyone has found any keys (two silver ones). I lost them today in Peckham rye park (31-03-25) around 1130am.
    • I am desperate to find somebody who has experience of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, who really understand the chronic clinical framework. I had found one doctor very good at this and for some years things went on smoothly,  until administrative changes or just his different agenda and priorities messed up totally my care: for about one year I did not receive the diagnosis of a comorbidity  I needed.  I had to go privately and discover that with a very cheap medication I would sort out awful pain and risk of complications in few days. After that episode,  I decided to change practice as I did not feel comfortable anymore going back there. But things went even worse. With the new surgery GPs I had to file a yellow card for a very idiot error in a prescription, then I have been denied prescriptions that I have on my list of repeated medications with the consequence I ended up in A&E that referred me to the hospital clinic for further assessment. It is really tiring!  I am feeling constantly dismissed if not even intentionally bullied by receptionists and young doctors or trainees. It is very stressful to deal with GPs that do not understand basic things. I do not have the resources to go privately for everything.  I manage my condition very well but any little issue I have (and I have many, to be honest) requires to be considered in the context of  autoimmunity and allergies, for which I cannot always rely on self-care I need to speak with a doctor.   junior doctors and doctors without understanding of rheumatic diseases tend to either prescribe medications I cannot take or dismiss the problems as common and non specific so not worth attention. It is not the case.   Also referral to specialists for monitoring a number of risks have been mismanaged by the new surgery with appalling waste of resources (it makes no sense to be refer me for a  wrong  issue or to the wrong clinic).  This new GP (that saw me just once in six months) told me I have health anxiety that I absolutely do not have. He ordered tons of blood test totally useless instead of trying to understand how to deal with an issue that is reported in clinical recommendations for my condition as very frequent and to be treated symptomatically (as I have been doing following advice from another private GP). I do  have health needs unrecognised by this GP so I want to change GP surgery again.    Does anybody have recommendations of local surgeries registering new patients with the NHS that have  doctors with this level of expertise in autoimmune rheumatic diseases? Please any help will be appreciated.  Ideal would be for me to have also the possibility of a chat with the doctor before registering and the ease of talking over the phone about problems - not sending an interminable chain of chats and text messages. I am really easy to talk to, I do not expect any miracle and I am not happy to take drugs so I am not the kind of patient that pests with phone calls and urgent requests for prescriptions. I just want to go ahead with my life and repeated prescription without harassment errors of judgements and superficial chats.  I am happy to travel anywhere in Dulwich and surrounding areas as long as they can register me (I live in Dulwich with postcode falling into Lambeth though not Southwark)  Thank you so much  Marbeya
    • This morning we had a guest come into our home, thinking it was our cat… this little man is not our girl Noona. Does anyone recognise him? We’re not sure what to do with him. Any tips?   We’re in the Denmark hill area. He seems quite friendly and isn’t looking for food so we believe he’s a house cat.
    • Wonder if the actual owners know what’s going on. That’s sad.
