Nicholas
Has anyone noticed the ridiculous new layout opposite Alleyn's school? Not only were we all inconvenienced by the road being closed for several weeks but the layout is really dangerous, they've raised the road slightly but alas there's no protection for the pavement. As a driving instructor, I use that road alot, alot of drivers just drive over the curb unaware that it is not part of the road. It's dangerous from all angles and in my opinion a complete waste of money as it serves no purpose and there's very little protection for pedestrians and of course, the school children.Nicholas Driving Academy, SE22Nicholas Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8058-townley-road-new-junction-layout/ Share on other sites
kford
Didn't mind it when I came across it the other day; the old junction was awkward and necessitated a big crane of the neck to see what was coming if driving from the village and turning right. Must've been tricky for van drivers. Noticed however that tyre tracks suggested someone had driven over the newly-made grass verge, as if the old road had never been removed. As for the kerbs - isn't that a nod towards a 'shared space'? jim_the_chin
I'm guessing you never cycled up townley towards the lights and tried to come out into traffic. That was dangerous. candj
I think the road layout is much better because the traffic on Townley has the right of way at the junction with Calton Avenue which keeps the traffic moving in front of the school with less of a build up. Also, they've put in a more obvious pedestrian crossing where the road is raised which forces people to slow down anyway, hopefully. lindylou
Apparently, the whole of dulwich village is to be a 20mph speed zone. New pavements are being laid at court lane, speed bumps in side streets, etc. all courtesy of southwark council. If you were to ask for an extra blue paper recycling bag (which I have on 4 occasions) forget it. Nope. You can just get on with the one that is so ripped and disgusting that the recycling guys are now refusing to take it. However, needs must, please watch out for all and sundry in the village, rich as they may be, for that is where southwark have decided to spend their money. PS. If anyone knows any laws on asbestos removal from a council property i would be grateful to hear. Many thanks. SteveT
I agree with candj it seems a vast improvement as the most busy road now takes precedent which improves mobility for the majority. When I first came across it I thought it was high time Southwark 'got it right' they were well overdue after the pigs ear they made of Half moon lane / village way junction where they changed the precedent to the mostly unused back street. Curmudgeon
As a regular cyclist and driver down that road the new layout is far safer and eminently more sensible IMHO Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8058-townley-road-new-junction-layout/#findComment-249632 Share on other sites
Asset
Ha Ha Hona, my thoughts too..Lindylou, paranoia or what?On the junction, I think it is better as it seems more intuitive for Townley to be the main road and Calton to be the joining traffic, however cars turning right into Calton from Townley now cut the corner really badly and go into Calton on the wrong side of the road as the angle is pretty tight - not impossible to negotiate just requires thought.I'm all for more crossings which there are now an abundance of there! eater81
Never saw any problem with this junction myself, save for the idiots who can't drive properly, mainly mothers picking up their offspring from the swine-flu infested Alleyns School. Quite why they had to close the road for weeks, forcing me to drive the long way round to get anywhere useful, I have no idea. Asset
Hang the bigger picture eh? If it inconveniences eater81 mildly for a couple of weeks.......At least they had the sense to do the work during the school hols. Nicholas
Interesting comments.Approaching from the traffic lights and turning right into Carlton Ave I have witnessed many drivers who seem to think they don't have to give way to oncoming trafic, because the road is so wide they think it's a continuetion of the road they are in.Regarding the tyre tracks over the pavement area is a concern, there's no kerb protection for pedestrians (bearing in mind it's opossite to two schools). On the plus side the layout should stop parking on the corners, which would help observation. Time will tell if it's an improvement.I am all for improving road safety, but I'm not so sure that this layout will help. onlyme
Hi, I am having lessons with Nicholas and on my last session we were discussing this thread. To show me waht he meant, we drove up to the junction and I got myself "into position" to turn right onto Carlton Avenue from Townley Road when (just as Asset described above) someone behind me cut across the corner on the wrong side of the road. Maybe he didn't want to be stuck behind a learner :'( I thought it was a coincidence but apparently it happens all the time...and not just to learners.PS No snide comments about learners please, I'm embarassed enough already. PPS If you are thinking about having lessons, Nicholas is pretty good.
