The general Met number for Southwark is

0300 123 1212

Opening Hours: 06:00-22:00 Mon - Sun

and I guess they'd put you through to the relevant people

Thanks for the replies. Am seeing people obviously casing out houses on our street on a regular basis, and people knocking on doors asking for people who have never lived in the street, then walking to a different street on being told wrong door number. I used to work with attempting to rehabilitate ex career convicts, and can usually spot a career criminal a mile off. Will be getting in touch with the local force from now on, shame they sold up and moved out of ED though. A real shame, our local Police were a good lot.

I can support this. I'm working at home most days now and have had several callers in daytime asking for people who clearly don't stay here before moving down the street. Not middle class paranoia - just blatant casing. The last guy looked like the Notorious BIG with a red baseball cap, phat jeans and a bandanda.

Then on Sat morning we watched fascinated as someone broke into a car on our street - phoned Peckham nick as it happened (ED closed which sucks).- but not heard back. There's no fear! Broad daylight, stuck his hand through the window, strolled (yes STROLLED) round to the other side, got in, jump started it and away - all in under 2mins.

To be honest I don't think they are targeting one part of ED more than another SCSB....I've never understood that particular forum sentiment. Pretty much any street with 2/3 empty houses during the day and high value goods inside, next to a much poorer inner urban area with high unemployment, drug probs etc is an open invitation.

    • In an area which (thank goodness) is stuffed with good and acceptable restaurants (East, West and Central Dulwich) Belair would have to be a real destination - hence I suggested the need for a very high quality offering which would encourage visitors to go in search of it. A restaurant next to a station is a very different beast than a country house down a side street. I know about it because I live, and have lived for nearly 40 years, pretty close. And I have gone there on a number of occasions in its different guises. Sometimes with great enjoyment, other times less so. But for a site like that to work it must deliver its promise, which because of the nature and cost of the site will have to be both high-end and not very crowded, which means high prices and probably aiming for at least twice the covers occupation most nights and some lunches. Frankly, it can't live on local trade alone (because there are too many good alternatives) - so it has to build a rep for people to travel there, and again and again.
    • But the bulk of the build is for student accommodation, with just 'some' affordable housing which will, if history is anything to go by, become much less once the scheme is started. Southwark has, I believe, quite a number of empty properties which are not in use. The number of people on Southwark's waiting list is frankly irrelevant to this scheme, which won't touch the surface. This isn't 'new housing' which is visible, but commercially profitable student bedsits (at least, the developers hope it will be commercially profitable).
    • Does anyone know if Tommy Rooney is away? I have a boiler emergency and he isn't responding to messages. I don't really want to use someone I don't know, and I know Tommy is excellent!
