Ah yes but before that the were commons rights, or at least the locals thought there were, and revolted. This was the genesis of the nature reserve (subsequently purchased by Camberwell Council in 1901 and dedicated to public use for ever).

The Rec has been in use for sports since the 60's I think but perhaps someone can confirm that. Though the council wanted to use the whole of the existing Camberwell New Cemetery, Rec and Allotments for burial, they didn't have planning consent and LCC had other ideas. Some reference to that on this forum, see posts from languagelounger:

So not strictly true that the Rec's use was meant to be temporary.

Save Southwark Woods campaign will not sacrifice any open land to save woods and graves in Camberwell Old Cemetery and on One Tree Hill in Camberwell New Cemetery.

That means the allotments, the rec, the nursery site and it means we will not accept digging up or mounding over any grave.

From what I know, Southwark Labour has kept the Rec, Nunhead Cemetery, and the allotments on the "table". Time to say: These places need permanence.

Tomorrow morning we demonstrate again at the destruction of trees, undergrowth and graves at Camberwell Old Cemetery. Meet at the gates at 9AM. SE22 0RU

When it comes to Mr Schaffer's comedy benefit it's now 100 acres?

Or has he found extra acres elsewhere?

Did Sue's question about the 14th February meeting get answered.

Oak Of Honor Hill had a history before Mr Nesbit's worthy book, but that discussion is better in the One Tree Hill thread.

I ask again - where does Lewis think the money will be coming from to maintain his parks? - and if they are not maintained (they wouldn't be, no funding) how quickly does he think they will be sealed off as being unsafe - and then how quickly will fly-tipping start again? I would guess if he had his way they would be sealed off within 5 years (issues to do with gaping graves etc. etc.). Then they would be of 'use' to nobody. Best case scenario would be that the currently maintained areas would be kept open (for a bit) and the currently over-grown areas immediately sealed off. They would not be an amenity but an eye-sore. And he is not going to get support from the Church to stop burials - they are in favour of orderly re-use.

Ah, don't mock, the man's grieving. Though that was very funny.

Does this mean it's all over?

Here is a video of Harriet Harman's party cutting down trees in Camberwell Old Cemetery today:

Harriet Harman kinda commented on cutting of trees in Camberwell Cemeteries in a tweet:

"Harriet Harman ‏@HarrietHarman Feb 1

Grt to discuss more local burial spaces & planting more trees in C?well Cemeteries w @MerrillDarren @WildLondon"

@wildlondon is the London Wildlife Trust is also supporting

If you decide to go for cremation, can we bring sausages and marshmallows? I do love a good BBQ.

Let's hope you have checked that your "funeral" does not clash with a real one tomorrow.

Do you have evidence of any grave being desecrated (by the council's works)? If you have this should be reported immediately. If you mean that self seeded trees in or over a grave were cut down - this isn't desecration. It's gardening.
yep, must agree the ssw twitter feed this morning in particular has been really, really amusing reporting the exploits to hold a funeral for a tree, as having been excluded from the cemetery, at least one arrest and best of all Lewis in a bowler hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's like a Ealing comedy via twitter!

SSW turn up at main gate, mystery man blocks entrance with large vehicle, all run around to side entrance instead. Meanwhile, Jon/Dan Snow's brother manages to get himself arrested. For some reason, original plan then reinstated and all the SSWers run back to main entrance. 25-30 people (at least one dressed as the Grim Reaper) plus three dogs, all running around trying to get into a cemetery.

You can almost hear 'Yakkity Sax' being played in the background...

Jesus wept, what a collection of nasty little keyboard warriors there are on this thread.

Lewis S and SSW are trying to protect an area of woodland within a metropolitan area. They are not personally gaining out of this, they are doing it for the benefit of the community.

The personal attacks, goading and p*** taking towards him are nothing short of disgusting and cowardly.

The council have acted in a wholly dishonest and disingenuous manner about this. I have (unfortunately) had direct dealings with the council about this and quite frankly after their lies and obfuscation they have lost my trust and respect entirely. Regardless of your feelings about how the opposition to these plans are conducting themselves, can we assume you are content to have a council who lies to get their own way, and who's plans are so economically illiterate that they are wasting valuable funds to push these plans through then your moral compass is truly broken.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
