No, not a joke, odd response Kel.

An interesting and talented actor who, in my opinion, handled his illness in the public eye with dignity and without self pity. Pancreatic cancer, the same diease that robbed the world of the talent of Bill Hicks, is a horrible, aggresive disease which often takes people far too young. Very sad.

Nobody puts baby in a corner!

I did get a bit tearful when they played a clip of him talking about battling on to work through the pain of his illness. He always seemed a proper old fashioned gentleman (as well as being just swoonsome in Dirty Dancing), and it's very sad.

Does anyone remember that American civil war mini-series, North and South? Old school.

Very sad - my father died 12 years ago of pancreatic cancer, and Anna defined it perfectly in her post. It's a testament to Patrick Swayze's fitness and determination that he lived 2 years beyond his diagnosis - one of the characteristics of pancreatic cancer is that it tends to lurk and is initially hard to diagnose before it starts to really take off; sufferers are typically given only months to live.

I felt very much for Patrick Swayze when he was diagnosed, having a reasonable idea of what he was suffering and was about to suffer, and as others have said, I think he dealt with his situation with great dignity. God rest.

Bloody hell, I remember that, but I was really quite young I think.

I've just looked, and it was 85 / 86, so I'd have been 7 or 8. Apparently there was a third series in 94, but I don't remember that at all.

    • If you want a small prickly evergreen for shade I would recommend Ruscus aculeatus. Unlike Pyracantha, which grows big and is unpleasant to prune, Ruscus only grows to a metre and it will grow in very dark dry shade where almost nothing else does. It is viciously spiny and has very good  red berries in winter.  Berberis darwinii and Berberis julianae are two good evergreen Berberis that will grow in partial shade. I usually order from Burncoose but I have always had a good service from Crocus.

    • I first subscribed to Tortoise two or three years ago, and also subscribe to the Guardian, and eg Byline and various others - I do feel it is important to support good media if you can. Tortoise have done some interesting stuff, tried to really reach out to readership and have been quite trailblazing on topical podcasts too. Having said that, I still can't quite see how it all fits with the Observer and I worry it will make both worse as they have different bases and dynamics in my view.
