Otta
And I think had the driver tried to "pull her off the bus immediately" she'd be screaming "get your hands off me, see what he's doing to me" and so on. I wouldn't be too keen on approaching that nutter. But anyway she's pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in a couple of weeks.http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/oct/19/woman-anti-muslim-bus-tirade-admits-racial-abuse Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/79784-racist-black-women-on-the-bus-that-went-viral/page/2/#findComment-917298 Share on other sites
Saffron
I didn't write "pull her off". I wrote "put her off", as in direct her to leave, not as in physically remove her. Drivers do have the authority to stop the bus and immediately kill the engine until aggressive passengers leave or are removed by police. (I have witnessed this a few times.) And if a driver's failure to act with due care for passenger welfare results in harm, it's their own driving license which can be revoked. Plenty of hardworking people in low paid jobs do their jobs very well. There's no real reason buses couldn't be better and safer. The training, service, and accountability of London bus companies is shite, and it's reflected in events like these. cella
Totally agree - the bus drivers should either stop and call the police immediately or do something to control the bus and protect the safety of all passengers. Sadly my experience is that, in the main, drivers don't do this and it puts everyone at risk. Today I witnessed a driver turn a young boy off the bus as he couldn't immediately find his pass - this is surely irresponsible as all kids have a pass provided and he could and should have let him stay on board to get home safely. Also a recent incident with a passenger behaving in a scary fashion the driver refused to stop and it was only because other passengers called the police that action was taken. I feel sure that drivers have to undertake some training with regard to the safety of their passengers but it seems that some bus drivers are either a bit power crazed or simply ignore their responsibilities. JohnL
The guy who chucked a guys zimmer frame from a bus and abused him has profusely apologised, said he's very ashamed of himself and is not racist and thrown himself at the mercy of the public.Sounds like he took some public relations advice :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/79784-racist-black-women-on-the-bus-that-went-viral/page/2/#findComment-917441 Share on other sites

I even feel a little sorry for some bus drivers because they've obviously not been adequately trained.Rather than trying to intervene personally/verbally as this bus driver did, I think they should just halt the journey at the next bus stop and request police. There is no good reason to tolerate racism. LadyNorwood
I was a number 3 bus recently - this man started shouting at me that I was personally responsible for slavery and that he was going to rape me, then get his mates to rape me and then they were going to chop me up into little bits and eat me for the "white slave trade bitch you are".... No-one on the bus said a word and let him carry on for 20 minutes. He got off at Lambeth Town Hall and I got off at Brixton station to go into (the dreaded M&S) a shop.... He was then waiting at the number 3 bus stop and as I got back on a number 3 he followed me and started his tirade against me again.... It was only when a lady with a buggy and small children got on and complained about his language that anyone said anything.... I didn't think at the time to film it on my phone as I didn't want to enrage him further.... He was standing near the driver and I was sitting at the back so everyone could hear him. The driver did/said nothing (on both buses). It was still very frightening and upsetting for me - both what he said and the fact that no-one intervened. Otta
I used to do buses a lot (ED to Woolwich for work every day) but since moving to Sydenham in 2006 I am a complete train convert. That said, my job involves travelling on buses with school kids, so it's no surprise I don't enjoy them anymore. uncleglen
I recently heard a conversation on the bus between 4 elderly West Indians complaining about something that I didn't hear but they were saying things like 'you think they'd be more grateful after we came here in the '50s and fixed their country up after the war'...bizarre...I was bursting to say that they didn't have to come.... Blah Blah
Think again about what they were saying uncleglen. It was obviously a conversation trying to make sense of the recent upsurge in racism and xenophobia. You'd probably be the first to have such a conversation if it were you and from some of your posts on here you seem to be only too willing to support that xenophobia. uncleglen
Unfortunately no-one gives two hoots about what others have sacrificed in the past so that we can all live in 'peace' and 'prosperity' today. Blah Blah
Territorial is just as bad, especially given that the wealth of the country you live in (and benefit from) was built off the profits of conquest, empire and slavery. Where was the respect for territory then? Blah Blah
I was merely pointing out the irony in Uncle's need to feel territorial, not blaming him for that history. How does abiding by the law of the land equate to being territorial Uncle? And how does that relate to the conversation you overheard on a bus from four West Indians? The reason why I asked you to think about that conversation again is because you seem to think that they have no right to criticise the poor attitude of some British people. Your reaction was not one of seeking to find out why they felt that way, but to tell them they didn't have to come to this country! You were so outraged (or baffled) by their comment that you felt the need to relay it on a thread about racism, to make what point exactly?
