Has anyone else experienced this?

5am like clockwork my little one wakes and seems in tremendous discomfort with wind. Legs draw up, lots of straining, this continues on and off until about 8/9am when he finally manages a proper poo.

It was significantly worse when we introduced a bottle of formula as a dream feed - we have tried two brands now. We have stopped this now.

But it seems to be happening even now when I have returned to solely breastfeeding. He feeds at 6.30pm, 11pm, 2am.

Any ideas? We have no similar symptoms during the day. He was very colicky in the early days but that settled apart from this 5am stirring? Could this be a dairy / lactose intolerance issue?

This is actually very common, my son was solely breastfed and we had this 4-5am grizzly state for months and just because of wind discomfort. Most of my NCT buddies also experienced the same. Your baby will eventually grow out it. Mine took his time for sure. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

We had a really noisy grunting baby between 5am and 8am for many of the early weeks. We even tried a Cranial Osteopath. I feel like he actually grew out of it (tho Osteo may well have helped as mentioned his stomach area was all a bit out of line). We still have the occasional night time lifting up both legs and slamming down but the noise went a while back. He's 5 months now.

Hope yours grows out of it soon, in the meantime I found earplugs helped me sleep and filter out some of the noise but you can still hear when they're asking for food.

My son is 8 weeks and suffering too. My daughter was exactly the same. I introduced a dummy which gives some comfort (and you can get rid of it when the pain passes) and I put my hand firmly on his tummy while he is moaning. And as much burping as possible. This seems to calm him a bit. I reassure myself that he isn't in masses of pain. It's more that he is getting used to the feeling of pooing and farting and his little insides aren't wuite developed yet. My daughter grew out of it but not until I had angsted myself to the doctor several times and tried everything around. it will pass. But realise that isn't that helpful when you are in the thick of it

Huge thank you to everyone for all your advice and support. It's so helpful to know I'm not the only one.

A mum told me that a doctor had told her it was likely to be because she was dehydrated or not drinking enough water. This sounded like the simplest solution in th world so for the past two days I've been drinking and drinking. And it's made the most enormous difference.

    • That’s another big hike on the Sainsbury’s mini rolls! I spoke to one of the managers on the day of the anchovies price rise but all he could say was that his store doesn’t set the prices. Very vague and not helpful. i started this thread about price rises in  Sainsbury’s and it’s somehow being blamed on Brexit etc!
    • And the Sainsbury’s own brand chocolate mini rolls have gone from £1.15 to £1.40 overnight, so 22%-ish. I prefer them them to the Cadbury original because they have a lot more chocolate on them, presumably because they’re made in a less advanced factory. I would think that getting the Rizla thin coating of chocolate that Cadbury’s accountants demand onto a piece of sponge is quite a sophisticated operation. Discuss.
    • Another recommendation for Leon. He was able to come out to our electrical elergency within 24 hours of me contacting him. His communication was great and whilst he could not solve our problem, he was able to perform tests to identify this and did so quickly and efficiently. He charging  is very fair and his manner very pleasant. Both of these in contrast to some experiences I have had elsewhere.    happy to put my name to recommending Leon. His number is  07707 925039.
