The Liverpool John Moore University Centre for Public Health published the latest Alcohol Profile for England - http://www.cph.org.uk/showPublication.aspx?pubid=661

Headlines, 65% increase in English hospital admissions, 15,500 people a year die as a consequence of alcohol, extra 415,059 crimes were attributable to alcohol with 12.2 crime per 1,000 residents in London - roughly 10% of all crime. HArd to extrapolate this to East Dulwich.

See attached covering Southwark.

I've also added the latest crime stats.

Hi elloriac,

i get soya milk in cartons which aren't tetrapaks - soya milk Yorkshire puddings are the best.

Hi Fuschia,

Central government should finish its spending review 20 October when it will tell local councils what money it will give them. Its been well sign posted that anything between 15-40% cuts to cope with the national economic crisis and central government provide around 75% of all the money local councils spend. In this climate I think we should wait to see how that pans out before I ask for a spending increase on something. Hope that seems reasonable.

Every Community Council in Southwark has a devolved budget - as per the last Lib Dem council budget - of ?100,000 to spend on repairing roads and pavements and ?75,000 to upgrade street lighting.

If you have any ideas for East Duwich ward please do let me know.

I'm expecting the next Dulwich Community Council meeting 16 September to start making decisions how to spend this.

Hi Fushia

On the One O'Clock Club James makes a very reasonable point about future spending. Sadly!

The One O'Clock Club needs rebuilding/refurbishing (some money set aside but more needed, probably around ?300K) and in addition it costs in the region of ?100K a year to run it on current opening hours.

However, along with Gavin and Renata (other Peckham Rye councillors) I've just been at a meeting about the club and morning opening was one of the things discussed. We're hoping to have another meeting in the coming weeks and we've asked to see details of what-would-cost-what and how realistic additional opening might be.

I don't think anything will change in the immediate future but just wanted to let you know that, despite the current financial constraints, we are trying to see what can be done.

On the One O'Clock Club it does seem like a lot but I suspect that the maintenance costs are a large drain on the budget and I understand from officers that they are expected to increase, hardly surprising when the building was build to house PoWs 70 years ago! This is one of the reasons why the rebuild, although costly, is what we need.

I've just spotted the post in the family room about this and it seems parents getting together to run sessions at the club is being discussed. Certainly, this, or other volunteers running morning sessions could be an option.

Re: One o Clock Club:

Volunteers = lower costs = more control by users.

However, such a move also requires reducing the dead hand of bureaucracy to allow volunteers to participate without onerous CRB checks and similar hurdles.

I am sure it could run with one staff member to open up etc and playgroups run by parents could use the space.

My estimate of the cost of a staff member for one morning per week is less than ?2k pa.

Hi Fuschia,

I think ?2,000/year is way out but the current ?100,000 should be plenty to maintain this building and provide 3 members of staff full time.

If it isn't then can i suggest a bunch of parents for a coop and offer to take it over from the council. A coop/charity is much more likely to find external funding for a rebuild than Southwark is. Such a group is probably more likely to get such a building used in the evening for other youth activities such as scouts/girl guides etc.

The East Dulwich Community Centre receives from memory around ?25,000/year has an ancient structure and manages to have nearly continuous back to back use from huge variety of community groups.

THis one...

9ph plus oncosts 23% x 3.5h x 48 weeks - #1859.76

Why, what do you think it would cost?

Even if the staff are on quite a high grade, the hourly rate won't exceed 14ph I wouldn't have thought... 3.5h per week for 48 weeks at #14 p/h comes to 2892.96.

Certainly, the cost of one staff member for one morning p/w is in the low thousands, that's for sure.

I do work in local govt finance, btw (education) so I am used to costing out such budgets! So less of the patronising please.

James sorry to correct you.

The East Dulwich Community Centre does not get any funding to manage the centre from Southwark. Upto around 15 years ago, it got around ?5k pa but since then it is entirely self funding. All income is raised from hall hire to around 55 or 60 groups and private hirers. The only funding we get from Southwark is for Community Development Worker and Project which is less than ?13k pa. Community Council has provided grants for specific works i.e. playground lighting and resurfacing etc. Also to run short term projects ( a few hundred at a time).

We have a paid p/t cleaner and caretaker and a p/t admin worker. Everyone else is a volunteer. Estaimated that our time at the EDCC comes to ?40.000 plus pa

I assumed 3.5h... the sessions actually run for 2 1/2h don't they? From what I've seen they seem to do 30 mins before and after.. so, yes. I assumed an hour for setup/take down and 2.5h for the session itself. It's only a very rough sum of course... I am just trying to show that the STAFFING for one morning session is a small amount, compared with the high running costs of ?100k pa which presumably include rates, insurance, electricity and all sorts that wouldn't increase, or only marginally, with increased use.

Couldn't this whole 35 page long single thread be given the honour of being a separate section of the forum so the different topics can be followed more easily. Given the popularity it might make it easier to follow the different ideas going on...for example, there you are reading about opinions of bins with interest when a new post about Barry road and radar traps pops up etc etc etc.and it gets harder and harder to find responses to particular points of interest. Surely a year on it's time to make it easier to read!!! Admin?????

I did manage to see this one but sophiesofa's right, please ask questions in the About this Forum section. If I created a section for people to find out people's opinions about topics like bins, speeding on Barry Road, cycle highways, Homestall road humps etc then it would just be the same as this ED issues section. Too confusing. This thread is "East Dulwich councillor - can we help?" and is about specific issues addressed to the councillor, not really for continued discussion about topics.

I've had several complained about trade waste collections from Lordship Lane businesses. The private waste contracts often have collections VERY early. often the businesses have forgotten they have neighbours and drop bottles into their bins loudly at odd and very late hours.

If you have any such problems can I ask that you keep a details diary of when and what disturbs you.

Contact the Southwar knoise team via 020 7525 2000.

If you fail to make progress please let me know so I can help.

Apologies for this post as this is not going to be of any interest to anyone, bar myself, but I did try and send a PM but haven't had a response so...

Please James, what is the brand of soya milk that doesn't come in tetra paks? I've been to two health food stores and Sainsbury's and haven't seen one - the closest was the granovita brand, IIRC, doesn't claim to be in a tetrapak, but still looks like a waxed drink carton & therefore has to be recycled the same way...
