Price of a hygienist for a teenager?

In preparation for braces, teenage son has been to the hygienist. He had a half hour appointment and it cost just over ?50! Is that normal? I tend to go once or twice a year but have never paid that much.

Was the cost related to special prep the teeth need before braces, eg special cleaning or surface treatment you don't normally receive?

In response to Saffron - not special prep but descaling etc so they're in top condition prior to braces.

I think what shocked me was hitting over the ?50 mark. I last paid around ?45 (I think) less than 6 months ago. We go to Townley Rd.

Now that NHS dentists do not descale (apparently due to contract changes) and now recommend hygienists for children as young as 8, this could get pretty expensive for many families.

Under 18s should receive free dental treatment. I went with my 16 year old for a check up in the summer holidays and she had a quick clean and I paid nothing.

She's had braces and I would have been shocked to ever been charged ?50.
