My son (now 2.5) loves "construction" toys like little tool kits, and basically anything with wheels! His favourite toy from his 2nd birthday was a cheap blue plastic tractor. Certainly in his case from 2 onwards he's become more interested in small toy cars (Matchbox style) rather than larger ones - you can get some great little sets (and his parents will probably thank you if you provide some kind of storage box for them!).
I don't know how much you want to spend, but a mini micro scooter is probably an unbeatable present. They say 3-5 years but most 2 year olds will get the hang of it v. quickly, hence the streets of ED being full of parents chasing tiny children scooting unfeasibly fast.

Yeah the mini scooter is a great gift - my two year old stood on it for around six months but now goes like the clappers.

Another cool gift is: VINTAGE FISHER PRICE RECORD PLAYER 1971 *RARE 8 SONGS* on Ebay http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=record+fisher+price&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=kids+record+fisher+price&_osacat=0
