Sunlover00
Would there be interest in setting up local fund raising events in ED?? Never done anything like that before but if there is a group of us interested could be another way we can help?? curlykaren
Dulwich Hamlet Supporters are holding an event and have a donations page, please have a look in the 'what's on' section of the forum, might be more efficient to join/promote/donate/support an already up and running scheme. If people sign the petitions please also click on the 'email my MP' link, if you can't think what to write then feel free to copy/paste my text....This petition now has over 300,000 signatories and awaits a response from the government. Please vigorously pursue not only an answer to the petition but a course of action that seeks to put an end to the shamefully inadequate response of our government.Thank you Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/73264-refugee-petitions/#findComment-896153 Share on other sites

mima08
Hi, I'm planning to go to the March, taking my 4year old (no other childcare), going with another family. Some people we mentioned this to thought it wasn't a good idea to take children because right wing groups could cause trouble ... It hadn't crossed my mind, but I have never been to a march, so a little uncertain. Views? confusedbyitall
I think if the right wing lot turn up they will be few in numbers and the police will be there to monitor (big brother and all that)Best advice I have heard is if your worried stick to the back or outskirts so if there is anything going down you can get out fast. Personally I think it will be a very peaceful march I will be taking my kids and I know mumsnet have been organising marching under a banner #couldbemychild. You could check their website for more info.I think kids need to see how powerful peoples voices are and its so important to stand up for what you believe in especially when you think your govt is in the wrong! mima08
thank you cbia, that's reassuring. It's what I had thought, but got thrown by some of the comments. Will check mumsnet, too. I totally agree with the point that children should see how important it is to stand up for your beliefs - as a child of the 70s, I was taken on lots of marches (in a different country) and some good came out of them....thank you for responding! Jayyfa
So good to see other people thinking and caring about this. I know there are lot of problems in the world but this feels so close and on doorstep as it were. There is a woman called Gracie - hellosailor - on this forum who has been collecting donations for a charity, and there is another, Kate Coggins who is organising collection in South London - Brixton. She's on facebook but getting loads of emails a day so may be a delay in response...https://www.facebook.com/events/404640226402154/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/73264-refugee-petitions/#findComment-897579 Share on other sites
newtoedf
mima08 I've done a few marches with my kids including a couple of Gaza ones last year which I imagine would have been as likely to attract trouble as the refugee march and never had a hint of trouble. In my experience there is a lot of hanging around at the start, especially if you are aiming for the back so go a bit late rather than early. I had to bail very early on the last climate march because the kids had absolutely had enough after an hour of hanging around and we only marched about half a mile! Taking scooters helps as at least you can tow them. Taking lots of snacks and lots of water is also a good idea too as it isn't necessarily possible to get out of the march very easily and pop to the shops. Also, there will probably be a fair few distressing images on placards etc. and it might be worth thinking in advance about how to deal with the inevitable questions. mima08
Thanks all for the feedback, also about preparing for questions - I really want to stop being one of the people who think they're doing enough with charity donations alone....
