Dog walkers Peckham Rye Park

I am not a dog hater, I really like them. But to all the dog walkers with 6 plus dogs please keep them on a lead

Even if you have one dog that might be a problem please leading.

It is the law that only up to 5 dogs can be walked per person

On or off lead

If the owner has control of the dogs there is no reason why they should be kept on lead

How can you possibly keep track of that many dogs defecating if they are off the lead?

I saw 3 people over Peckham rye park last week, all walking around together with about 30+ dogs between them.

I've sent an email about this issue to parks@southwark.gov.uk. If anyone else who is concerned about this problem does the same then hopefully the council will do something about it.

Also how can a dog walker keep track of each dog's fouling if they have that many dogs?

I am a new dog walker, I walk 4-5 dogs a day for a couple hours round Peckham Park. The company i work for has trained me with the dogs, and to make sure I pick up all there fouling, and make sure they are behaved.

As I know the dogs well and how they are with others I can let all of them off the leed and they will all stay in distance and never run away. I always keep an eye out along with every other dog walker to get ALL fouling and we work hard to do that. Even as a new be I don't like hearing that people have problems with us walking round the dogs, it's a lovely business that gives the chance for owners who don't have enough time to walk their dogs to be done well. We all work hard and care so much for the dogs, we are all friendly so please do come up to us if you see a problem!

I really wish people would stop writing inflammatory posts about dogs and their owners / walkers. Most (most) owners and walkers are responsible and pick up after their dog(s) and are able to keep them under control. When dogs are in a group, they enjoy playing together - not "fighting" or causing "chaos". I don't think I've ever seen someone's dogs literally fighting each other - that would be distressing, and perhaps needs to be reported. I agree that 30 dogs between 3 people is excessive, but again it sounds like exaggeration.

As long as people have dogs - and presumably have to go out to work to be able to afford them - they are going to need to employ a dog-walker. Without them the dogs would be left alone for hours upon hours every day which is not an option. Many dog walkers in ED have been doing it for a number of years, and also some will have a background in dog behaviour and training. Also, As far as I am aware, there is only one Dog Control Order in place (4 per handler) at One Tree Hill due to irresponsible dog walkers.

All us ED'ers have equal responsibility when using our local parks and it is in all of our interests to do so, so let's just try to live and let live a bit more, and maybe try to modify such emotive language about people who are effectively in the park 365 days of the year, rain or shine.

I certainly agree with the "live and let live" approach and also think that inflammatory statements are probably not necessary. I also believe that dogs will be dogs, and that's fine by me!

My gripe should probably be in a new thread as I don't think it necessarily relates to professional dog walkers.

Question: Why do some dog owners think it's perfectly fine for their dog to run over to me when I'm sat in the park, jump on me, steal my picnic (on countless occasions), run around my blanket, sniff or even lick my baby or small child, put their nose in my face etc?

Do they get up from their own blanket, run over to retrieve their dog, put it back on a lead or apologise? No!

This is not an exaggeration or inflammatory, I can guarantee something like this will happen every time I go to Peckham Rye. This summer I often ended up moving on because I didn't like a dog taking me by surprise with a wet nose in my face (or mouth.....bleuuuurgh!)when I'm lying down relaxing.

I have dogs and so I'm not simply complaining because I'm a dog hater.

Owners have a responsibility to train their dogs. If they can't be trained to come back when called then they need to be kept by their side.

If a dog is not well trained... to return on command, heal etc and is off the lead- then one could argue that it's not really under control. In my experience, this applies to a large proportion of the local pooches.

I know this is an old link - but find Jane's comment particularly frustrating. I have refrained from posting anything negative about Jane1 and her business, but I have to say that she is being hugely hypocritical when she says, "I would love to find the owner of the dogs they walk, to let the know what is happening to there dogs when they go on there daily walks" - at least these dogs are going for their walks!!

Jane1 lied outright to us about walking our dog, Freya, when she were spotted by a friend coming to our flat, and leaving (in a waiting taxi) without Freya - all in the space of 5 minutes, and then when confronted, claimed she had actually taken Freya for her walk. Maybe this was a one off, maybe she doesn't 'walk' dogs anymore - but all I will say is people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I saw two women one morning last week, gabbing away to each other while ignoring the three dogs they had between them, two Border terriers and a Cavalier. They were in front of the dogs at most times, and I saw them miss at least one pile of poo, from the Cavalier. If two women can't or won't monitor three dogs, then what hope is there for larger amounts of dogs?

The park seems like a weird sort of dog racetrack now.

Why do people get a dog if they have to go out to work? It's not fair to the dog to be left alone for hours, especially a young dog. Having a dog walker isn't enough.

I am up at 6:30 for a 40 minute walk and we have a dog walker for lunch time then another walk at 4:30. Unfortunately, the dog walker we trusted was lying to us (see previous comment). We now have other arrangements, which are working well. We work hard to ensure our dog is a happy, loved dog, as do most dog owners.

I wasn't actually aiming my question at you,because I didn't know you went out to work, but if you got a dog knowing you had to get a dog walker to take it out, then why? Some people work from home and are with their dog most of the time, but could use a dog walker to take their dog out occasionally. But don't understand how someone could get a puppy and then go out to work every day and expect a dog walker to train and socialise a dog.

Equating children to dogs is rather strange. I don't know anyone who would leave young children alone before the age of 11 or thereabouts.

Maternity / paternity leave? The availability of (and indeed requirement for) schooling?

It's actually a real concern. There have been surveys showing that around a quarter of owners admit leaving their dogs alone for much of the day - that's just the ones who admit it. Dogs are social animals and have been further bred to enhance certain sociable traits. Leaving them alone for more than a couple of hours is cruel. If we're being really honest a dog walker is no substitute either in the case of a very owner focussed dog.

I have notice around the whole park there is signs that dogs should be kept on leads but they don't seem to listen it can be a annoying when you have a little child and the dogs are running everywhere and I have to pick her up because the dogs are playing of the leads

Most of the park is off lead although there are on lead sections around the pond and some paths and a dog free picnic area.

I love all animals, however I thought by law you are only allowed to walk four at a time. I have no issues as long as they do pick up poo, which I'm sure most do, however my only concern is, if one of the dogs got in to a fight or was attacked by an idiot with perhaps one dog off lead, I should imagine it would be quite hard to manage, especially if all dogs of lead. My personal opinion is if I couldn't walk my own dog, I wouldn't have one and the way things are going with dogs getting stolen, I wouldn't let anyone take my dog out, unless I was sick, then I'd only trust my brother! That is just me though, live and let live!!!!
