When I first moved to this area, was driving around partly to look for a good parking spot and partly to explore the place. Happened to end up on Homestall Rd turning in from the end of Therapia Rd. What a bumpy drive that turned out to be! Stupidly, about a week later, I somehow forgot all about it and ended up driving through it again looking for parking. Never again! Even the Google car doesn't appear to have gone down there. The residents of the road seem to live with it happily though or am I wrong?
Homstall road is'nt a private road it is owned by southwark council. The homeowners that live on the road seem to think it is privately owned by themselves, therefore getting up a petition to stop the road being surfaced so as to stop anyone wanting to use it.

If the concil own it then that can resurface it. That part of Homestall from the Tunnel works, up the side of the reservoir is actually private road.

I could not find any direct evidence other than a Thames Water Design application which mentions it.

I remember viewing a house for sale on that stretch a few years ago

Have not been up that round for decades - the playing fields on that site ( are they still there?) were part of the Inner London Education Authority's playing fields for local schools. Every week, wind, rain or shine us girls from Friern School

would be marched up to Homestall Road, changed in their freezing huts and made to play hockey, and practice our athletics.

These were in the days of Games and PE being undertaken in white polo shirts and navy blue knickers ( no short skirts/shorts or joggers then) so consequently there were always lone males hanging around watching us through the railings.

As I got older, Homestall Road was lovers lane, with many cars with steamed up windows late on Friday and Saturday Nights.

Road was unmade then- gave appearance that you were in the countryside!

Reading this makes me want to go out and buy a car and go park it on Homestall Road.

I thought anything "privately" owned that those who owned it would be under obligation to make sure whatever it was was maintained/looked after?

I apologise for my ramblings I'm in my own little world right now and I must say it's all quite pleasant!

Nope, not true.

And all streets that have dreadful pot holes and have not been black-topped (asphalted or concreted) you will usually see the words "Private Road" under the sign for the road name. And lots of 4x4s parked down it!

FYI and not much related, my Aunt is staying with me and she lives in northern California in the foothills of the Sierras, and there are about 50 properties in her mountain area. It's all unmade road and it takes her about 35 mins to drive to the nearest shop at no more than 15mph, and then an hour to the nearest little town. You do NOT want to find you forgot the milk.

Whether the road is private or not, I have avoided it. Just felt a bit sorry for the residents but didn't realise it was meant to be that way. Not all vehicles parked on that road are 4x4's. Felt so bad for my poor little car, it was worse than driving over cracked speed bumps! (Owners of small cars would know how that feels.)
