Starmix
On reading this topic, I have to admit I'm siding with the 15yr old. The age old tradition of "finders keepers" defines in great length how one who stumbles across such treasures as free monies or items of value can acquire these as his/her own, it's the loss of the person due to their downright stupidity, hence "losers' weepers"I mean seriously, how retarded can you be? ATM's were built in the most foolproof way, ensuring that you can't get overly confused when operating them, and it even emits a LOUD FUCKING BEEPING SOUND to indicate that your stupid ass has to take the money from the machine. In my opinion unless you're deaf or severally handicapped, you have no excuse. You're a moron. However, in light of receiving said ?100 by sheer luck and the grace of the gods, I would proceed to spend a portion of it on a new Xbox360 game (probably a first person shooter, gotta love shooting things) and the rest would be spent on weed. I'd proceed to smoke a fat cone and game my tits off, delighted in how life had thrown me this golden opportunity. If someone has gone out of their way to ignore the protocols set in place to avoid such stupidity from occurring, they don't deserve the cash back. Quite simply, you'd have thought that natural selection would have culled them by now, but sadly life is lacking in her ways these days.So let's pose a return hypothesis. If greed is a powerful human emotion, and for centuries we've profited off the misfortunes of others, why should it change now? Natural selection has nothing to do with it. The point is, if someone loses something, you give it back to them. We got into space/landed on the moon due to intense rivalries between superpowers. Neither of them collaborated on projects, and yet low and behold! Look where we are. The Nazi's needed oil resources to push into Europe. They claimed a few neighbouring countries, allowing 1years supply to become at least 10. I suppose your argument there would be "they co-operated to achieve that though" In which case I feel obliged to point out that it was greed that fueled said co-operation. I thought not.. >Can I ask, if you lose your phone & I find it, does it give me the right to call my buddies up in Australia on your phone, >after all "finders keepers"Of course it does. That is if you can pull it off before my common sense cancelles the phone. Besides, companies use their common sense to see that you've never made calls to these numbers before, and with the claim of a lost phone, it's HIGHLY doubtful you'd be charged for the calls, especially if you act reasonably and explain yourself coherently. Face facts, we're exploited nearly every day [whether we know it or not], and you'll find that "Good Nature" is often the first thing to be exploited. What next, if a birthday card, with cash in it, is delivered to you by mistake, do you keep it?? Would you take a wallet from a dying person because they won't need it?? Having a good set of moral principals or a good nature doesn't make a person weak. Having a good set of moral principals or a> good nature doesn't make a person weak.We can take it to extremes if you'd like, but the point I was trying to make was that if you blatently ignore loud beeping after taking your card back, you deserve to have your money taken. I wouldn't steal someone's birthday cards, or pillage a dying person, but if I found a wallet in the street, I'd take the cash. Cassius
I go to a cashpoint at midday and find ?100 (as if) - I shout out - hoy has anyone just not picked up their ?100 from the cashpoint - how many people will claim it as theirs? I would reckon at least 85% of people who heard me. SimonM
Leaving the moral aspect aside for a moment - some people alas simply don't recognise any moral dimension to these matters - keeping the money in these circumstances is legally theft and punishable as such if caught. Applespider
Starmix, what would you do if someone saw you pick up a dropped wallet and hunt through it. Would your behaviour change if it was being 'judged' by those around? Just curious... The Honesty Lab has some interesting questions on it about how honest we all really are. I'd consider myself pretty honest but found myself questioning some of my answers on it.If I found anything valuable, I'd hand it in to the police, the people behind the bar etc. I have some belief in karma - and hey, if we all did that, then if we did lose something, wouldn't it be nice to think we had a good chance of getting it back? After all, you've never got any idea of the circumstances of the person who lost the money/item (aside from being unfortunate) and they might need it a lot more than you do. A shoot-em-up game over the family groceries... huncamunca
Mr Starmixis that your mum I hear calling your for your supper ?I realise that the summer holidays are long and boring when you only have an xbox, a sock and a copy of razzle for entertainment. Those raging horomes are a beast aren't they?Dont worry though, in time your complexion will clear up and if youe exam results go well, who knows, that private education may even get you into university, where you may be able to get a girlfriend who thinks your fascination with neo-nietzschean supremacism and associated juvenile arrogance is rather endearing.I would tone down the sprinkling of casual drug references in your posts though - they are such a givaway, at least until you have sampled the full range and can speak with some authority. And your mum wouldnt like it either. But I wont tell.Hang in there dear, life may seem a cul de sac of futility and loneliness at the minute, but it will get better I'm sureWe are all rooting for you.anyway, chop, chop, your favorite eggy bread and warm milk is waiting downstairs, and if you are good and eat it all up, theres probably a petit filou for dessert. See, its not all bad is it ?
