Staying in Manchester

We are planning to go to Manchester to see the newly refurbished Whitworth Gallery. Does anybody have any good recommendations for places to stay and/or eat, and any other good ideas for things to see and do? We are not clubbers (way too old) but have a wide range of interests and like wandering around cities.

Hello.... I haven't been for a few years now but I really liked staying at the Great John Street Hotel or the Malmaison when I was there for work....

You could hop down to Didsbury and go to Green's, a really good veggie restaurant in a nice, leafy area. Tea at the Midland would be nice as well.
