Hi guys,

Having recently bought a new bike, I am keen to do a bit of exploring, and I am looking for local destinations to ride to on the weekend.

Last weekend I rode to the Greenwich observatory and back from ED and it was very pleasant. Can anyone recommend any other good bike destinations in the area?

Cheers

Hi, well done for getting a bike -

I'd recommend going up to the river (through the Burgess Park filled-in canal route), crossing at Tower Bridge and then following the Thames Path towards Canary Wharf. Years of docking history, some bland flats, one of the best pubs in London (Prospect of Whitby) and you eventually will end up at the Isle of Dogs.

Take the Greenwich foot tunnel under the river and then ride back from Greenwich.

Allow a full day (depends how many beers you have in the Prospect)

South of ED is a bit non-descript, unless you like Norwood.

Another good one is up the hill to Crystal Palace from the top of LL, through Crystal Palace park and down to the bottom to see the weird Victorian dinosaurs, which is a bit of a shorter one with a bit of a steep hill climb.

I've cycled west as far as Richmond Park, which is great for cycling round, the journey there is a bit non-descript unfortunately.

At Barnes you can join the river though, and follow the Thames path back as far as Houses of Parliament and then come back through Kennington - again, allow a day.

And I was just about to say the ride to Richmond Park is lovely...

Nice signposted cycle route through the parks and back roads of south London (TfL cycle map very useful the first time). You can take in Brockwell Park, Clapham Common, Wandsworth Common (currently a campsite for Wimbledon freaks), Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon Common before reaching Richmond Park.

Bark.

That's a better route than the one I took.

Welcome to the cycling community! :)-D

Perhaps start with .....

http://www.southwarkcyclists.org.uk ....part of London Cycling Campaign (LCC)

and

http://www.lcc.org.uk

both have rides for all tastes - catch the Southweark Cyclists "afterworkers" for example

to find a route try ....

http://maps.camdencyclists.org.uk/allroutes/ ...Camden Cyclists are also a LCC local group

Also for getting out into the country try .....

http://www.centrallondonctc.org.uk/

Especially the * (1 Star) and ** (2 star) ones - *** can mean 80 -100 miles at this time of year as I know to my cost!

Or for something a bit more strenuous ....

http://www.dulwichparagon.com/ .... see "club rides"

Enjoy!

    • Hi Busterb, Yesterday I turned up with a scanner & towels, hoping to take a deceased tabby down to TNV. The body was moved moments before arrival & had not been turned in to any vets, rescues or animal hospitals. I am wondering if this could have been the same cat & if someone just tried to move the tabby further away from the road. Please be warned, viewers discretion is advised. but this is what the deceased tabby looked like: https://www.facebook.com/groups/900015513463302/permalink/3729980853800073/  In any case, if you haven't been able to get someone to scan or take down to a vet, I can scan tomorrow morning.
    • Wholeheartedly recommend Aria. He was polite, responsive and sorted our leak, from an old tap on an old plumbing system, with no bother and on same day.
    • GP not willing to refer you on? Say, to King's or similar. Odd
