'twas a perfect venue, and good company, great conversation and good to meet newbies. I sat there with my book (Robert Newman's "Manners") for nearly the whole time i was there, waiting for someone to swap with. Punters came, punters went, no one brought a book... unitl Bellenden Belle turned up with two. Happy reading Belle. I'll get through "Kevin" as soon as i can - which in my case will be the next time the meet gets round to the Gowlett!

Just to add a thank you to Citizen Ed for Newman's Manners... I can be spotted reading it on the train each morning to London Bridge - and it makes the journey whizz by! It's completely different to my usual reading matter so actually I am rather pleased - I would never have chosen it, but so far so good!

It's a great book, and quite different to both his other novels. Books by comedians don't rate very well but that is an exception

His erstwhile comic partner David Baddiel wrote a couple of very so-what novels before writing a fanrastic book based upon his families experience as Jewish refugees unwanted by Britain as the 2nd world war came to pass

Fair dues PollyD - I guess I mean in the wider literary world they wouldn't be rated. I remember the Insomnia one.. which was the HIV one? And have you read his latest?.. but I fear we are now off-topic and should carry this on in the book thread

To stay on topic - where were you instead of the EDF drinks!!

We were out in London Bridge and left there at about 10.30pm, hopped on a no. 40 and thought we'd come to the Gowlett but weren't sure about closing times (mainly of the pizza oven owing to huge hunger). I'm afraid we had a kebab and went home - stylish huh?

True that his books aren't v high brow but a good read nonetheless. The HIV related one was:

I'm too sleepy to move this to another thread. Maybe we'll be moved to the right place by the morning.

    • My experience is that my local letter box does have week-day-ly collections - but I think very early in the morning, not at the old 'around 5.00pm' times. There are several daily collections from the box outside the Forest Hill Road sub-post office. I don't think the 'Monday' tab is now ever changed. Mail collections from boxes have got nothing to do with the service we (don't) get from the Peckham Delivery Office. Your Wednesday 12th posting would probably only have been collected on Thursday 13th, if it was posted after 9.00am. If it was being delivered in East Dulwich (where the Peckham DO does come into play) then getting it by the following Tuesday is probably par for the course.
    • Are there no daily collections from post boxes any more? On Wednesday Feb 12 I posted a Valentine's Card in the postbox which is about 20 metres from our house to make sure it arrived by Feb 14 (yes I know I could've put it thru letterbox but that's not as romantic is it). After I posted it I noticed the little metal thingy said "Monday" but I thought this must be a mistake and had not been changed. However, Valentine's Day came and went and no card arrived. In fact it arrived on the following Tuesday, Feb 18 so I'm guessing the Monday collection metal thingy was correct. Has it ever been announced officially that there are no longer daily collections from letterboxes? I remember a time, not even that long ago, when the red postman pat van would pull up at least twice a day, every weekday.
    • My lovely tuxedo cat, Rexy, has been missing since Wednesday which is very out of character. Rodwell Road area, SE22. He is a rescue cat so really quite timid with people he doesn’t know. If you spot him, could you please contact me? Many thanks. He is chipped and neutered.  Photos attached.
    • I just wanted to add to this stream. We employed Paul Edgeley  to fix our lights upstairs. They had suddenly all gone out and we could not isolate the issue. He came round the next day and fixed the issue - a problem with the old wiring in the attic - he put in new wiring for us. We were so happy with the job  that we asked him to do some other work in the house. I'm happy to recommend Paul.   His number: 07802627967
